The Service Manager is responsible for the effective planning, delivery, and continuous improvement of all preventative and reactive maintenance activities across the generator rental fleet. The role ensures fleet reliability, safety, compliance, and availability through robust planned maintenance programmes and effective emergency breakdown response. The Service Manager leads the service function, managing Service Controllers, Engineers and Technicians to deliver consistent service standards across all depots. The role also oversees service performance, reporting, and escalations, driving high levels of uptime, customer satisfaction, and continuous improvement.
The Service Manager has overall responsibility for:
- Generator fleet reliability, uptime, and serviceability
- Delivery of all planned preventative maintenance and emergency breakdown response
- Day-to-day leadership of the service, technical support, and field engineering function
- Consistent service standards, processes, and performance across all depots
- Effective management of service performance, reporting, escalations, and continuous improvement
- Producing, reviewing, and improving RAMS for service activities, and ensuring they are implemented across the engineering team
- Comply with company health and safety policy
- Comply with ISO H&S, Quality and Environmental Management procedures, Service Operations & Fleet Maintenance
- Own and manage preventative maintenance strategies for the generator rental fleet, ensuring schedules are planned, delivered, and recorded in line with company and manufacturer requirements
- Manage reactive maintenance and breakdown response to minimise downtime and customer disruption
- Oversee service planning, job allocation, and resource utilisation across the depot network
- Ensure RAMS are created, updated, and applied appropriately across servicing, breakdowns, and operational tasks
- Maintain and improve service procedures and technical standards
- Drive improvements in fleet reliability, service efficiency, and equipment availability
Depot Network Integration
- Act as the central service point of contact for depot managers on service-related matters
- Ensure consistent service standards, processes, and compliance across all depots
- Support depots with service planning, engineering capability, and technical problem-solving
- Identify depot-level service challenges and drive corrective and improvement actions
Escalations & Customer Support
- Act as the escalation point for issues and high-impact service incidents
- Confident communicator with engineers, depot teams, and customers
- Committed to high service standards and continuous improvement
People Leadership & Development
- Lead, manage, and develop Service Controllers, Field Service Engineers, and Technical Support personnel
- Recruit, onboard, train, and support service staff to meet business requirements
- Carry out regular one-to-one meetings, performance reviews, and development planning
- Promote a strong safety-first, customer-focused, and accountable service culture
Performance, Reporting & Continuous Improvement
- Monitor and manage service KPIs including uptime, response times, first-time fix rate, and utilisation
- Ensure accurate and timely service reporting across preventative and breakdown activity
- Analyse trends, repeat failures, and root causes
- Implement corrective actions and continuous improvement initiatives
- Provide operational input into fleet planning and wider business improvement
Qualifications
- Proven experience in a Service Manager or senior service leadership role within generator hire, power generation, plant hire, or heavy equipment sectors
- Strong technical understanding of diesel generators and associated electrical systems
- Experience managing preventative maintenance programmes and emergency breakdown response
- Proven ability to lead and develop field-based engineering and technical support teams
- Experience operating within a 24/7 on-call or standby environment
- Strong communication and customer management skills
