We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Engineering Standards Manager to drive consistency, quality, and continuous improvement across engineering operations at the Bristol Depot. Working closely with department Foremen across multiple engineering areas, this role will help establish clear engineering standards, improve ways of working, and ensure equipment is consistently prepared and delivered to a high standard. The position is primarily workshop-based, providing a strong on-the-ground presence to support Foremen and teams, improve communication and workflow, and embed a “one workshop” approach across departments. The successful candidate will play a key role in developing both engineers and Foremen, helping to strengthen capability and enhance overall performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Workshop Coordination & Operational Support: Support and coordinate activity across all Bristol-based engineering departments, including PDI, Workshop, Large Generators, Container and Engine Refurbishment. Work closely with department Foremen to assist with planning, prioritisation, and allocation of work. Promote effective communication between departments to ensure smooth workflow and minimise delays. Identify and address operational bottlenecks to improve efficiency. Provide a consistent on-the-ground leadership presence within the workshop environment. Work alongside department Foremen to provide guidance and support with day-to-day team management. Assist with handling operational challenges, workload balancing, and team coordination. Share best practices and encourage consistency in leadership approach across all departments. Support the development of Foremen and engineers through coaching and mentoring. Promote a collaborative working environment and a “one workshop” approach.
- Quality Management & Continuous Improvement: Set and enforce engineering standards across all departments, ensuring consistency in how work is carried out and delivered. Require corrective action where standards are not met, working with Foremen to address issues and improve performance. Monitor and maintain high standards of engineering quality and workmanship across all departments. Establish and enforce consistent sign-off standards across all departments, ensuring equipment meets defined quality criteria. Own root cause analysis of repeat quality failures and drive corrective actions through Foremen and teams. Support the introduction and adoption of best practices across all departments. Assist in developing and improving operational processes to enhance efficiency and reduce rework. Drive attention to detail to ensure all equipment is delivered to a consistently high and professional standard. Support the implementation of the company’s engineering competency and development framework and take responsibility for its ongoing management and consistency. Assist in identifying skill gaps and development needs within teams. Work with Foremen to ensure accountability for team output, quality, and adherence to defined engineering standards. Work with Foremen and management to support training and progression planning. Encourage continuous improvement and professional development across engineering teams.
- Cross-Depot Support (Future Development): As the role develops, support quality and operational consistency across the wider depot network. Carry out visits to other depots to review engineering standards and share best practices. Assist in identifying improvements and supporting their implementation across sites. Act as a key link between engineering departments and the South West Depot & Asset Manager. Provide regular feedback on operational performance, challenges, and improvement opportunities. Support coordination of meetings and communication across engineering departments. Ensure key issues are identified early and escalated appropriately where required.
Skills & Experience
- Strong engineering background (mechanical, electrical, or power generation preferred).
- Minimum 5+ years’ experience within an engineering or workshop environment.
- Previous experience in a supervisory or leadership role (e.g. Foreman, Lead Engineer).
- Experience within a rental, fleet, or service-based environment is advantageous.
- Good understanding of engineering processes, maintenance, and repair operations.
- Ability to coordinate multiple workstreams across different departments.
- Strong awareness of quality standards and operational efficiency.
- Strong leadership and people support skills.
- Good communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Hands-on approach with a strong presence in the workshop.
- Problem-solving mindset with the ability to identify and resolve issues proactively.
- Ability to work independently while supporting a wider team structure.
- Willingness to travel occasionally across the depot network as the role develops.
- Full UK driving licence.
