As part of a growing and agile Environmental Planning team, the Principal Environmental Consultant will lead and coordinate EIA work across multi-disciplinary teams, collaborate with technical specialists, deliver high-quality environmental impact assessments, advise clients on environmental matters, manage project components, develop new business opportunities and mentor team members.
Role accountabilities:
- Lead coordination and delivery of environmental work undertaken by multi-disciplinary teams, influencing project development and delivering optimal environmental outcomes.
- Produce and review high-standard work, ensuring quality and compliance.
- Partner with Impact Assessment Team members across the UK.
- Proactively manage selected projects or components, allocating resources, managing subcontractors and ensuring quality assurance.
- Lead and support tender proposals/bids as part of a project-winning team.
- Provide environmental advice and support to clients, project managers and colleagues.
- Engage with consultees and stakeholders.
- Develop outstanding reports, summarising and explaining outcomes to non-technical audiences.
- Manage projects and oversee performance on technical, commercial, quality, health and safety aspects.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Good knowledge of EIA practices and solid understanding of environmental and sustainability principles.
- Experience across various project types, ideally in energy, residential/mixed-use, regeneration sectors, and major infrastructure projects such as rail and highways.
- Proven experience managing and coordinating EIA screening and scoping activities, including technical review of specialist chapters in Environmental Statements.
- Practical working knowledge of the UK planning system and consenting process.
- Strong report writing, verbal and presentation skills, with ability to review works of others for quality.
- Experience in multi-disciplinary coordination and leadership of projects, with strong project management and technical skills.
- Experience consulting and negotiating with planning authorities, regulators and stakeholders.
- Ability to work effectively as part of an established team and supervise staff where required.
- Commercial expertise, including forecasting, project management and quality assurance.
- Relevant degree or equivalent qualification, preferably with chartered status or working towards.
- A valid UK driving licence.
- Desired – experience in SEA and/or Integrated Impact Assessment projects.
- Desired – knowledge and application experience of sustainability, waste or carbon assessments.
