As a Project Manager within Arcadis’ Rail North team, you will be responsible for managing and delivering small to medium‑scale projects, or discrete packages of work within larger programmes. You will operate within defined scope, commercial and governance parameters, working closely with clients, internal disciplines and delivery partners to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently and to the highest professional standards.
The role provides a strong foundation for progression into more senior project leadership positions, with increasing exposure to complex project delivery, commercial accountability, client relationship management and people leadership.
Key Accountabilities- Project Delivery & Quality
- Manage the delivery of assigned projects or work packages in line with agreed scope, programme, budget and quality requirements.
- Apply appropriate project management tools and techniques to plan, monitor and control delivery performance.
- Identify project risks and issues, implement agreed mitigation measures and escape where required.
- Lead or actively contribute to regular project reviews and ensure actions are tracked to completion.
- Work collaboratively with discipline leads and subject‑matter experts to ensure coordinated, high‑quality project outcomes.
- Financial & Commercial Management
- Work within established financial and project control systems to produce and maintain project plans, budgets and forecasts.
- Monitor financial performance, highlighting variances and supporting corrective actions as required.
- Demonstrate a sound working understanding of key financial concepts such as WIP, cashflow, net versus gross revenue and utilisation.
- Support the commercial management of projects, including fee changes, assumptions and exclusions, and the coordination of sub‑consultants.
- Contribute to optimising commercial performance through efficient resource use and timely support to invoicing and cash collection activities.
- Client & Stakeholder Management
- Communicate effectively with clients and stakeholders on project matters, demonstrating awareness of client drivers, priorities and expectations.
- Support the development and maintenance of positive working client relationships through professional, timely and accurate communication.
- Liaise and collaborate with third‑party contractors, suppliers and delivery partners to ensure clarity of roles, responsibilities and interfaces.
- Risk, Safety, Health & Sustainability
- Actively support the management of project risks and compliance obligations.
- Ensure projects are delivered in line with safety, health and environmental requirements, promoting a positive safety culture at all times.
- Support the identification and implementation of sustainable project solutions consistent with Arcadis’ environmental and social commitments.
- People, Collaboration & Communication
- Work effectively as part of multidisciplinary teams, contributing positively to project and team objectives.
- Provide day‑to‑day support and informal guidance to junior colleagues where appropriate.
- Actively engage in personal and professional development activities.
- Communicate clearly and professionally across a range of audiences using appropriate written, verbal and digital communication methods.
- Digital & Continuous Improvement
- Use Arcadis project management systems, data and digital tools to support efficient and evidence‑based project delivery.
- Contribute to continuous improvement by sharing lessons learnt and identifying opportunities to enhance project management practices.
Qualifications & Experience
- Relevant experience delivering projects or workstreams within the rail, transport or wider infrastructure sector in a consultancy or comparable environment.
- Demonstrated capability in core project management disciplines, including planning, cost control, risk management and stakeholder engagement.
- Sound commercial awareness, with experience working under standard forms of client and sub‑consultant contracts.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret information to support informed project decision‑making.
- Effective communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across disciplines and stakeholder groups.
- Membership of, or working towards chartership with, a relevant professional body (e.g. APM, ICE or equivalent), postgraduate qualifications in project management, business or finance are advantageous but not essential.
