Role description

As an Water Resources Consultant at Arcadis, you will support the delivery of some of the UK’s most exciting and challenging water resources, water environment and infrastructure projects.

Working as part of our multidisciplinary Climate Adaptation team, you will contribute to a broad range of studies for clients including water companies, local authorities, regulators, developers and major infrastructure providers.

You will work alongside experienced water management professionals and technical specialists, developing your skills in water resources, hydrology, water balance assessment, environmental assessment, climate resilience and sustainable water management.

You will support defined tasks within larger projects, contribute to technical analysis and reporting, and develop your capability through on-the-job learning, mentoring and professional development.

The role is primarily aimed at a developing water resources consultant, with opportunities to gain broader experience across Water Cycle Studies, WINEP-related investigations, water company planning and integrated water management.

  • Role Accountabilities
  • Support the delivery of water resources, hydrology, water balance and integrated water management projects.
  • Assist with the preparation of water balance assessments, water resource studies and technical reports.
  • Analyse hydrological, meteorological, environmental and water demand datasets to support project delivery.
  • Contribute to Water Cycle Studies, Water Framework Directive assessments, low-flow assessments, environmental assessments and sustainability studies where relevant to project requirements.
  • Support WINEP-related investigations and future AMP planning work where water resources, environmental assessment or regulatory evidence is required.
  • Support the development of nature-based solutions and sustainable water management strategies.
  • Assist in the preparation of abstraction licence applications, permitting documentation and regulatory submissions.
  • Assist with the preparation of business cases, options appraisal material, bids, fee estimates, capability statements and technical submissions, with support from senior colleagues.
  • Produce GIS mapping, data visualisations and technical figures to support project reports and client presentations.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across flood risk, hydrology, environmental management, planning and infrastructure disciplines.
  • Develop positive working relationships with clients, regulators, stakeholders and project team members, with support from senior colleagues.
  • Support project management activities, including task planning, progress updates, quality assurance and communication with project teams.
  • Ensure compliance with Arcadis quality, health, safety and environmental requirements.
  • Support the wider team and line manager with reasonable project, business development, health and safety, knowledge-sharing and operational activities as required.
  • Take ownership of your professional development through on-the-job learning, training opportunities and professional institution engagement.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree in a relevant discipline such as Water Resources, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Geography, Environmental Science, Hydrology or a related subject, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Understanding of water resources, hydrology, water management or environmental assessment principles gained through academic studies, placements, apprenticeships or professional experience.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word and Power Point.
  • Ability to use, interpret or develop GIS outputs and spatial information, with support and training where required.
  • Strong numerical, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to analyse and interpret environmental, hydrological and water resources data.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear and concise technical reports.
  • Enthusiasm for learning and developing technical knowledge within a collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work effectively as part of a project team.

Desirable

  • Experience in water resources assessments, Water Cycle Studies, flood risk, hydrology or environmental consultancy.
  • Experience or interest in Water Cycle Studies, Water Resource Management Plans, WINEP investigations, AMP planning or water company investment drivers.
  • Familiarity with Water Framework Directive assessments, integrated water management or sustainable drainage concepts.
  • Experience or interest in low-flow assessment, environmental flow assessment, abstraction licensing or environmental permitting.
  • Experience working with environmental datasets and regulatory guidance.
  • Knowledge of climate resilience, drought resilience or water efficiency strategies.
  • Experience or interest in supporting the preparation of bids, business cases, options appraisals, capability statements or fee estimates.
  • Membership of, or aspiration to join, a relevant professional institution such as CIWEM or ICE.
