We are looking for an exceptional Targeted Mentor to join our growing team and build trusted relationships with children and young people facing a range of challenges, including school disengagement, emotional wellbeing needs, family adversity and exploitation risks.

Working across Liverpool, Knowsley and Sefton, you will use a trauma-informed, strengths-based approach to help young people recognise their strengths, build resilience, develop aspirations and achieve positive, lasting change.

This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled practitioner who combines strong safeguarding practice, professional curiosity and emotional intelligence with a genuine passion for empowering young people.

If you believe in the power of relationships, see potential where others see barriers, and want to make a meaningful difference, we’d love to hear from you.

About the Role

As a Targeted Mentor, you will deliver high-quality one-to-one interventions with children and young people aged 8-18, building trusted relationships that enable positive change.

You will work alongside families, schools, social care, and a range of partner agencies to provide coordinated support tailored to each young person’s individual needs, strengths, and goals.

You will work alongside the Young Person Advisory Service (YPAS) to support children, young people and families as part of a coordinated partnership approach, delivering joined-up and holistic support.

This is a highly rewarding role for someone who can engage young people who may be reluctant to access support, navigate complex circumstances, and advocate effectively on their behalf.

You will play a vital role in helping young people:

  • Improve emotional wellbeing and resilience
  • Build confidence, self-esteem and aspirations
  • Increase engagement in education, training or employment
  • Develop positive relationships and support networks
  • Reduce risks associated with exploitation, offending, or exclusion
  • Identify and achieve personal goals and positive future pathways

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver intensive one-to-one mentoring interventions using a strengths-based and trauma-informed approach.
  • Build meaningful and enduring relationships with young people, acting as a trusted adult and positive role model.
  • Co-produce support plans and outcome-focused interventions that reflect young people’s voices, aspirations, and strengths.
  • Plan and deliver trauma-informed, strengths-based group interventions that build resilience, strengthen protective factors, promote positive relationships, and support positive outcomes for children and young people.
  • Work directly with parents, carers and wider family networks to strengthen protective factors around young people.
  • Advocate for young people and ensure their voices are represented within professional meetings and multi‑agency processes.
  • Work collaboratively with schools, social workers, youth justice practitioners, health services, and community organisations.
  • Identify, assess and respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns in line with organisational policies and procedures.
  • Maintain high‑quality case records, outcome monitoring, and reporting.
  • Contribute to service development, reflective practice, learning, and continuous improvement.
  • Qualification in Youth Work, Social Care, Counselling, Education, Community Work, Criminology, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Has experience working directly with vulnerable children and young people.
  • Can quickly build trust and rapport with young people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Understands trauma-informed, relational and strengths-based approaches.
  • Has experience managing a caseload and working towards measurable outcomes.
  • Demonstrates strong safeguarding knowledge and professional curiosity.
  • Has experience working alongside families and within multi‑agency environments.
  • Is resilient, reflective, emotionally intelligent, and highly organised.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and occasional weekends to meet the needs of the service, young people, families, and community programmes
  • Holds a full UK driving licence and has access to a vehicle for work purposes.
  • Experience supporting young people affected by exploitation, school exclusion, poor mental health, offending behaviour, care experience, or family adversity.
  • Knowledge of local services and safeguarding pathways across Liverpool City Region.
