We’re making a difference: Together, we can ensure that there is enough water for everyone, now and in the future. Portsmouth Water are seeking a Meter Reader to join our Meter Reading team. The primary responsibility of this role is to accurately read water meters within our service area in a timely and efficient manner. The ideal candidate will consistently maintain high accuracy while balancing productivity. As this is a customer-facing position, exceptional customer service skills are essential. The successful candidate will possess a positive, flexible attitude, with a strong commitment to Health and Safety. They will be comfortable engaging with both internal and external customers, working outdoors in all weather conditions, and proficiently using handheld devices. Excellent communication skills, along with a commitment to our core values of excellence, integrity, and future-focus are essential for this role.

What will you be doing? Key Responsibilities

  • Read household and non-household meters accurately for billing purposes
  • Capture clear photographic evidence of meter readings when required
  • Record and submit appropriate skip codes when meters cannot be read or issues are identified
  • Prioritise non-household and urgent reads when necessary
  • Complete ad-hoc meter investigations and queries
  • Meet individual and team performance targets
  • Work in line with risk assessments and all health & safety procedures at all times
  • Maintain a good driving standard, including meeting “Lightfoot” assessment requirements
  • Support and assist colleagues, including answering queries and sharing best practice

What do you need? Skills, Qualifications & Competencies

  • Confident using modern technology (e.g. handheld devices and mobile apps)
  • Ability to accurately record and submit information
  • Good communication and customer service skills when dealing with the public
  • Previous experience in meter reading or the water industry is desirable, but not essential; full training will be provided
  • Street Works qualification is desirable, but not essential; full training will be provided
  • Water Hygiene certification is desirable, but not essential; full training will be provided
  • The applicant will be required to have a full UK manual car driving licence (Class B), will have to undergo a driving assessment, consent to ongoing driving licence checks and additionally any other safety measures deemed necessary by Portsmouth Water Ltd in connection with driving.
