Portsmouth Water is excited to announce multiple openings for Mechanical and Electrical Technicians in our well-respected Production Department. As an integral member of our team, you will be responsible for the maintenance of our water treatment works, enabling the effective production of safe drinking water. Ensuring all equipment at the treatment works is operating safely and efficiently, you will provide mechanical and electrical support and expertise to ensure the reliable and efficient function of all our assets.

What will you be doing? Key Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, commission low voltage switchgear, motor drives, valves, gas dosing equipment, pneumatic plant, pumps and motors.
  • Read, understand and work from mechanical and electrical drawings.
  • Ensure that equipment is installed and calibrated to the manufacturers specifications and is auditable.
  • Supervise team members and assist with their development and learning.
  • Exchange information with other team members, plant operators and departments within the Company as required.
  • Complete documentation accurately and in a timely manner to maintain internal change control standards.
  • Monitor external activities in the areas surrounding our works for any activities that may affect the integrity of the water sources, asset reliability, available leakage measures, and levels of unplanned outage.
  • Recommend design changes, if necessary, to ensure that plant continues to function efficiently and effectively to maintain levels of service.
  • Commission chemical-dosing systems to enable efficient control of water treatment, responding to installation issues and operational changes to optimise levels of service.
  • Assess and optimise energy on site and carry out checks for safety, security, and productivity, reporting any faults, issues and concerns that need escalation.
  • Ensure the appearance, cleanliness and operation of our sites meets company standards, whilst maintaining water quality and hygiene standards.
  • Ensure all work is carried out in line with the Company’s Water Production procedures and in full compliance with on-site Health and Safety, Quality Standards, OFWAT – (Office of Water Services), DWI (Drinking water Inspectorate), Environmental Agency regulations and EUSR - Energy & Utilities Skills Register standards for clean water operations.
  • Comply with the Company’s standards, policies, processes, systems, and procedures to ensure all risks are identified, managed, and mitigated.
  • Keep Work and Asset records up to date to ensure that they are satisfactory for internal audits.

What do you need? Skills, Qualifications & Competencies

  • A to C grade or Level 4 or above, GSCE English, Maths and a Science based subject.
  • ONC / Level 3 In electrical or mechanical engineering and a recognised apprenticeship in a relevant field within water utility or similar industry or equivalent experience as specified below.
  • BS7671 18th Edition Wiring Regulations.
  • Relevant experience in a process and industrial environment.
  • Experience implementing process improvements via control system modifications and experience in diagnosing and fixing complex process and control system faults.
  • Knowledge of Chemical Handling.
  • Knowledge of basic hydraulic principles.
  • Proficient with working from electrical drawings.
  • Experience of working with Human Machine Interface (HMI) / touchscreen devices.
  • A good understanding of water treatment processes and / or water industry exposure.
  • Computer and smart phone literate.
  • Full UK driving licence (will be required to undertake our driver assessment).

Salary & Hours

Full-time | 38 hours per week + out of hours work £38,876 - £43,020+ Standby rota payments & overtime opportunities which can increase this earning potential + Non-contractual bonus related to company performance of up to 6% of basic salary.
