Overview
Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust is a leading provider of care, education and research. The post is a Fixed Term – 12 months (Maternity Cover) position within the Urological malignancy team. The successful candidate will contribute to oncological treatments (radiotherapy and some systemic treatment) for patients with urological cancers, based in Chichester and Portsmouth, with an established brachytherapy program for prostate cancer. The team is supported by nurse specialists and is actively involved in clinical research and trials.
This is a 7 PA post, with options to discuss additional duties with the department.
Responsibilities
- Join the Oncology Team as a Clinical Oncology Consultant and participate in all facets of departmental activity.
- Collaborate with the Chichester Urology MDT; provide systemic treatments in Chichester and radiotherapy in Portsmouth.
- Engage with an established brachytherapy program for prostate cancer and contribute to ongoing clinical studies and trials.
- Engage with multidisciplinary colleagues and maintain high standards of patient care, teaching, and audit.

Person Specification
- Essential – Full GMC registration with a licence to practice; higher professional training in Clinical Oncology.
- Desirable – MRCP/FRCP or equivalent; BSc or MD.
Clinical Experience
- Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT (proposed date within 6 months), CESR or European Community Rights.
- Appropriate higher Clinical Oncology qualification; evidence of clinical or research fellowship.
Clinical Skills
- Demonstrable skills and experience in areas of special interest relevant to the Job Plan; understanding of clinical risk management.
Knowledge
- Clinical knowledge appropriate to the role; commitment to evidence-based practice; IT skills; confident presentation ability.
Research/Publications
- Experience recruiting to clinical trials; willingness to participate in research as a Consultant; participation in audit.
Leadership/Management
- Essential – evidence of leadership/management experience outside of medicine and effective team working; Desirable – formal management training/qualifications and service improvement leadership.
Teaching Experience
- Essential – evidence of effective teaching of SHOs; Desirable – formal teaching qualification and training of registrars.
Other
- Good oral and written communication, problem solving, prioritisation, and ability to work in multi-professional teams; understanding of NHS Clinical Governance and resource constraints; probity; effective presentation skills; and related attributes.
