Key Responsibilities

  • This is a replacement post aimed at maintaining and developing services within the Lower Gastrointestinal surgical unit.
  • The role involves benign colorectal resections, IBD surgery, and joint operations with gyn‑oncology surgeons.
  • Core duties include:
    • Performing benign colorectal resections and advanced IBD surgery.
    • Supporting the busy on‑call rota with consultant on‑site involvement.
    • Using advanced minimal access and robotic techniques in colorectal surgery.
    • Managing general surgical emergencies and providing concise clinical judgement.
    • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams in endometriosis, gyn‑oncology, IBD, abdominal wall reconstruction, pelvic floor, and emergency services.
    • Attending monthly MDT meetings for colorectal pathology, endometriosis, gyn‑oncology, and IBD, and participating in bi‑monthly complex MDT discussions.
    • Contributing to training and development of junior staff and mentor junior surgeons in robotic colorectal procedures where required.
    • Maintaining a robust audit programme and publishing outcomes in national series where applicable.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice.
  • FRCS or equivalent surgical qualification.
  • Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT (within 6 months), CESR or European Community Rights.
  • Evidence of an advanced colorectal fellowship.
  • JAG accreditation for lower GI endoscopy.
  • Trained in general surgery and able to manage common surgical emergencies.
  • Demonstrable skills and experience across the breadth of colorectal surgery and emergency general surgery, with evidence of a commitment to developing the post.
  • Understanding of clinical risk management and evidence‑based practice.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in IT and presentation.

Desirable

  • Higher degree or postgraduate thesis.
  • Experience in robotic colorectal surgery.
  • Experience in and outside speciality beyond colorectal surgery.
  • Publications and recognition in the field.
  • Participation in audit and quality improvement.
