Porterbrook is on an exciting journey at the Long Marston Rail Innovation Centre in Warwickshire, and we are looking for outstanding people to be a part of our team at the 135-acre site. We are investing £75m into the future of rail at the Long Marston Rail Innovation Centre - a major commitment that includes the development of the UK's only continuous test loop. This investment will see the site play a pivotal role in the future of the UK's railway, as an exceptional facility to test and trial new traction technologies, securely store rolling stock and provide training in a live environment.
The UK’s first hydrogen-powered passenger train was built and is being tested by Porterbrook here, and we are also the home of the country’s largest outdoor rail exhibition, Rail Live. Our small, close-knit and passionate team based at the site ensures that everything runs smoothly across Long Marston Rail Innovation Centre each day, and we have some exciting opportunities to join them.
About the role
A great opportunity for an exceptional Shunter to join the Porterbrook team.
Role Purpose
To be responsible for the safe movement of trains, facilitation of the storage of customers fleet and provide light maintenance associated with the stored fleet.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure safety of all movements of moving rail vehicles in and out of the Long Marston Rail Innovation Centre.
- To provide light maintenance activities associated with the storage of vehicles as directed by the Operations Manager.
- Observe and adhere to site procedures and all aspects of Health & Safety at all times, in particular those procedures around the movement of fleet around the site and track.
- Conduct daily checks of the stored fleet and report any defects and/or damage.
- To support the movement of assets around the site on behalf of customers and tenants.
- To provide light maintenance as required on assets as directed by the Operations Manager.
- Complete associated documentation in respect of the laid down processes and procedures on site.
- Carry out shunting duties in line with the defined procedures in a safe and controlled manner and any relevant maintenance and safety checks required by the shunters.
- Ensure all working areas are kept in a clean and safe condition.
Skills / Experience
Responsible for controlling the safe and efficient movements of rail vehicles at the Long Marston Rail Innovation Centre.
What you’ll need to have
- GCSE in English and Maths is required.
- Competent in rail locomotive driving and shunting of passenger and freight stock.
- Extensive knowledge in basic rolling stock maintenance.
- Competent in fork lift truck operation and crane operations.
- Must have driving licence for motor vehicles.
- Excellent working knowledge of the railway operations from a depot perspective.
- Excellent knowledge of safe systems of work for railway depot/yard operations.
- Working knowledge of passenger and freight rolling stock systems.
- Good general understanding of rail traction and safety systems.
- Basic knowledge of Lean Manufacturing tools and techniques is advantageous.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in rolling stock shunting operations.
- Experience in manufacturing processes is advantageous.
- Experience in creating and following standard work.
