Porterbrook is a leading rolling‑stock financier and asset management company, operating a diverse portfolio of passenger and freight trains across the UK rail network. This role is for an Asset Management Engineer within our Asset Management Team.
About the Role
The successful candidate will undertake a range of asset‑management activities, ensuring the safe disposal, harvesting, storage, and tracking of rolling‑stock and spares assets. Key responsibilities include:
- Managing the safe disposal of Porterbrook T&RS in line with procedure ENG/T2/28.
- Harvesting and storing spares from vehicles being disposed of, ensuring they are packaged and protected.
- Managing the commercial sale of T&RS assets, providing technical assistance, liaising with legal to draft agreements, and limiting liability.
- Overseeing the storage of off‑lease vehicles, ensuring compliance with fleet and maintenance procedures, and maintaining vehicle condition.
- Auditing strategic, leased, and contractual spares to maintain accurate tracking and availability.
- Producing annual summary reports for each fleet and analysing trends to support rectification work.
- Supporting routine asset condition monitoring and asset redeliveries to ensure acceptable condition and zero liability.
- Contributing to other projects within the Asset Management remit.
Key Responsibilities
Asset Disposal
- Disposing of end‑of‑life T&RS assets following ENG‑T2‑28, ENG‑T2‑24, and ENV‑T2‑05.
- Developing transparent disposal plans with suppliers and ensuring capacity for future needs.
- Securing suitable decommissioning specifications and contracting decommissioning work as required.
- Maintaining documentation for auditability and liaising with legal on sales or donations.
- Harvesting spares from disposed vehicles to support remaining fleets.
Asset Storage
- Co‑ordinating with the fleet team to create storage procedures for vehicles entering storage.
- Ensuring storage procedures, contracts, and ENG‑T2‑19 are followed for spares recovery.
- Booking vehicle movement as required.
Contractual and Leased Spares
- Managing audit regimes for leased, contracted, and strategic spares.
- Providing coverage for the Spares Manager to maintain uninterrupted receipt and delivery.
Vehicle Condition Reporting
- Supporting vehicle condition monitoring and costing defects for annual summary reports.
- Assisting with redelivery cost assessments.
- Co‑ordinating with procurement to validate costing models and with IT for model development.
- Performing inspections for redelivery or ad‑hoc coverage.
Safe Working
- Ensuring safe working practices and required PPE are worn.
- Maintaining visitor and staff safety awareness.
Reporting Function
- Providing status reports on assets sold or disposed of.
- Reporting to the Head of Asset Management verbally and via email.
- Regular liaison with all Porterbrook functions.
Other Duties
- Assisting with general support within the Asset Management Department as directed.
- Supporting wider Fleet Services and Engineering Services departments as required.
Skills / Experience
Required
- Knowledge of railway industry rolling stock, organisation, and key players.
- Understanding of contractual obligations and operating lease agreements.
- Experience with vehicle and spares asset management requirements.
- Knowledge of vehicle maintenance and overhaul processes.
- Strict compliance with PPE requirements in depot environments.
- Professional office attire for meetings (smart business wear).

- Organised and detail‑oriented.
- Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills.
- Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office and database knowledge.
- Holder or working towards IEMA and IOSH safety certification.
