About Portal Biotech
We have built the world’s only platform capable of sequencing full-length proteins at the single molecule level. Our nanopore technology reads intact proteins of any size, capturing information about both sequence and post-translational modification co-occurrence in a manner no other system can match. Our technology enables scientists to see protein biology in entirely new ways, with applications across drug discovery, diagnostics, and biosecurity.
About the role
We’re looking for a Software Engineer to join our Analysis Platform team. You’ll help build the data infrastructure, cloud systems, and applications that turn raw nanopore signals into biological insights, serving both internal teams and external users. This role could suit a hungry junior engineer ready to grow fast, or a mid-level engineer looking to own critical systems at a fast-growing, fast-moving company. We’re looking for an engineer who enjoys the craft of building software, works comfortably with ambiguous specifications, and proactively asks thoughtful questions. You will be based at our headquarters in White City, London. Primarily on-site with hybrid flexibility.
Tasks and responsibilities
- Build and maintain cloud data infrastructure on Azure: storage, compute, data pipelines, and secure APIs
- Develop internal tools and data systems that accelerate Portal's R&D, giving teams across the company better access to the data they need to move faster
- Help deliver and maintain customer-facing systems on our platform, ensuring external users can derive biological insight from Portal's data reliably
Qualifications
Essential
- Demonstrated ability to build and ship software using AI tools. You should be able to show us something you’ve built with AI and explain the choices you made
- Strong software engineering fundamentals: clean, maintainable code and an understanding of why that matters
- Experience with or appetite for cloud infrastructure, data systems, and APIs
- Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field, or demonstrated equivalent practical experience
Desirable
- Experience with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP), including infrastructure, networking, and security
- Familiarity with data pipelines, ETL, or stream processing
- Experience building web applications or APIs
- Familiarity with DevOps principles and effective use of GitHub
- Understanding of operating systems, networking, or systems-level concepts
- Experience working closely with a technical/product lead to translate requirements into well-structured implementations
- Previous work with scientific data, research environments, or data-intensive applications
- Working understanding of biology or experience collaborating with scientists
Our technology works and customers are coming. We need engineers who want to build the software infrastructure that turns our data into insight.
