Compensation: £38,203 per annum + Shift Allowance £11,667
About The Role:
Based at the London Container Terminal, this role is essential to ensuring the safe, efficient and seamless flow of operations across all site areas. Working within the Control function, you will use terminal radio and computer systems to coordinate activities in real time, supporting both vessel and landside operations. It is a fast‑paced, detail‑focused role where strong situational awareness, clear communication and the ability to adapt quickly are essential to keep operations running smoothly.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure smooth container flow in all operational areas.
- Activate the ‘Auto Plan’ IPOS automated planning tool.
- Support vessel loading and unloading sequences as per the Auto Plan.
- Manage the work programme while vessels are operating in conjunction with OMS and Berth Coordinators.
- Handle late and held cargo for export by re‑planning and rescheduling when necessary.
- Ensure the safe stowage of General, Hazardous, Temperature controlled and out‑of‑gauge containers.
- Adhere to all pile weight restrictions.
- Adhere to all vessel stability requirements.
- Send or copy all relevant paperwork and EDI files to parties as required.
- Highlight areas of poor performance.
- Identify lost time and productivity issues.
- Ensure carriers are manned at the correct times and report any anomalies to the shift manager.
- Allocate work to carriers using the terminal operating system.
- Monitor and react to ship operations and process import and export containers.
- Monitor landside operations and control queues, both VBS and non‑VBS, reacting to changing situations.
- Monitor all VBS barriers.
- Deal with VBS enquiries via VBS Phone.
- Monitor all equipment allocated.
- Maintain the terminal operating system to move and update stows and record information received in control from equipment operators.
- Operate the Yard Management System, liaising with Terminal Planners and lifting equipment drivers.
- Ensure reefers are unplugged through the Terminal Operating System before delivery to vehicles or vessel imports.
- Maintain yard housekeeping during quiet periods to keep an effective stack.
- Receive and process information in Control as directed by OMS.
- Liaise with and plan rail movements.
- Conduct radio communication.
- Undertake relief duties in other departments when required.
- Answer the OMS phone if it cannot be answered by the primary operator.
Qualifications & Skills:
- GCSE (A‑C passes) or equivalent, including English.
- Good communication skills, including radio communications.
- IT systems skills, particularly operations or warehousing systems.
- Ability to work autonomously and as an effective team member.
- Ability to react to changing operational situations and allocate equipment to maximise productivity.
- Attention to detail.
- Proven commitment and reliable work history.
- Experience working shifts, including unsociable hours.
- Full UK right to work.
- UK driving licence.
