About the Role
This role provides an ambitious civil engineer technician at the beginning of their career the opportunity to accelerate skills within a complex, operational port environment. The successful candidate will work on diverse infrastructure projects ranging from quayside structures and pavements to drainage systems and utilities in a live, 24/7 operational setting that presents unique engineering challenges.
As a Civil Engineering Technician, you will take genuine ownership of projects from inception through to completion, supported by experienced engineering leadership. You will manage real projects with budgets, programmes, and contractor interfaces from day one; this is not a graduate training scheme.
Typical projects include quayside and marine structure repairs and upgrades, internal road and pavement reconstruction and repair programmes, drainage and utilities infrastructure works, structural inspections and remedial works, and estate development projects supporting operational growth. Regular site presence across the Port of Tilbury estate is required; the role does not support remote working.
Essential Requirements
- Unrestricted right to work in the UK (no visa sponsorship offered)
- Civil Engineering degree (BEng/MEng) or equivalent
- 2‑3 years post‑graduate UK construction or civil engineering experience, working with contractors on site
- Full UK driving licence – site travel is a daily requirement
Key Responsibilities
Project Delivery
- Take ownership of civil engineering projects from feasibility through to practical completion
- Manage project programmes and budgets (typically £50k – £500k)
- Coordinate with operational teams to schedule works around 24/7 port activities
Technical Responsibilities
- Produce and update technical drawings using AutoCAD
- Develop scopes of works and review contractor designs and method statements
- Apply engineering principles to solve practical problems in a live operational environment
CDM and Safety Compliance
- Act as client representative under CDM 2015 regulations
- Ensure contractors comply with port safety requirements and permit‑to‑work systems
Key Skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with competing priorities
