JOB PURPOSE

The Senior Engineer is responsible for day-to-day management of the Engineers and to support development and delivery of the Port’s strategically aligned engineering maintenance plan. The Senior Engineer is responsible for ensuring best practice, supporting the development of the Port’s procedures and continually developing to ensure there is a process of continual improvement.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Be the central point of contact for lead advisors and stakeholders for day-to-day engineering related work.
  • The role requires interfacing between internal departments and external agencies, such as Architects, Engineers, Construction Workers, Sub-contractors, Client agents, Clerk of Works, and Site Staff, as well as some coordination of sub-contractors to ensure Port obligations to the sub-contractor are understood and discharged.
  • Work closely with the operational teams and Head of Engineering to develop objectives, strategies, and lead multi-year maintenance plans.
  • Support the project team and wider business with specialist technical knowledge and advice.
  • Lead on development of engineering works supporting the Port to deliver excellence.
  • Mentoring of team members and wider business.
  • Support the Head of Engineering to develop and gain agreement to an Asset Management strategy that ensures the short, medium, and long-term plans are set and developed in line with operational and strategic requirements.
  • Facilitate workshops to establish requirements and solution options to support the Port to develop Business cases and plans to deliver.
  • Preparation and development of design briefs, cost plans, commissions, and specifications for work packages for development works, including investigations, architectural and structural design, and construction, working with the Procurement Manager.
  • Preparing scopes for engineering works, looking at options, costs, time, environmental impact, and risk assessments.
  • Technically proficient and have a problem-solving mind.
  • Adhere to/champion the Port’s financial, procurement, project and management policies.
  • Ensuring that engineering solutions adhere to current standards including health and safety requirements.
  • Manage full compliance with CDM regulations including maintenance of all relevant documentation records.
  • Engineering support to the Port with clearly defined plans and clear communication.
  • Build working relationships between teams to ensure flexible working practices across the Port.
  • Foster a culture of development where ‘experts’ share their knowledge and develop others.
  • Proactively seek to develop your skills in line with the role requirements and changes in best practice and technology.
  • Other duties of a similar level as required.

RISK MANAGEMENT

  • Be alert to all possible safety risks, raising any concerns and reporting events through the Assurance Framework.
  • Be familiar with and adhere to all relevant company Policies, Procedures and Local Work Instructions.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  • Degree (or equivalent experience) in an engineering discipline.
  • Membership of an appropriate professional organisation.
  • Several years relevant postgraduate experience.
  • Methodical approach with attention to detail.
  • Hands-on approach to problem resolution.
  • Delivery of alternative solutions and value engineering, enhancing the Port’s position in line with the business requirements.
  • Be able to analyse complex problems and critically evaluate solutions.
  • Be able to visualise and explain technical solutions and tailoring the information to the level of the recipient.
  • Strong decision-making skills but being aware of their technical limitations and knowing when to refer.
  • Excellent communication skills and stakeholder management at all levels.
  • Be able to categorise, prioritise, plan, and implement effectively.
  • Ensure that the Engineering plans are always communicated and understood by the operational teams, project teams, and wider business.
  • Be responsible for the Engineering budgets and work with the Head of Engineering to set multi-year budgets and deliver within agreed budgetary tolerances.
  • Excellent interpersonal and team working skills.
  • Have (or be willing to develop) a comprehensive understanding of best practice and current standards within building and engineering.
  • Experience of change management and processes.
  • Proven engineering project experience at office and site level.
  • Significant experience managing multiple complex engineering projects and on occasion with multi-million-pound budgets.
  • Track record of managing teams to successfully deliver complex engineering work through strong leadership and line management capability.
  • Demonstrate leading engineering management methodology and leadership.
  • Experience running large scale Engineering projects using NEC contracts as the client.
  • Good delegation and resource management skills.
