Applications are invited from individuals with the relevant qualities, experience & certification to fill the position of Marine Assistant. The Marine Assistant is responsible to the Harbour Master for the safe and efficient management of all marine activity within the Port of Blyth harbour limits. The successful candidate must be able to remain calm and professional during all operations and should demonstrate excellent communication skills. The post will be part of a 5-person rota working a 365 day / 12-hour watch keeping system which includes weekend and public holiday working. Previous experience of marine navigation / Port operations would be desirable though consideration will be given to individuals from other associated backgrounds with the relevant skills and experience required.

Responsibilities

  • Report to the Harbour Master for the safe and efficient management of all marine activity within the Port of Blyth harbour limits.
  • Maintain calm and professional conduct during operations and demonstrate excellent communication skills.
  • Work as part of a 5-person rota on a 365 day / 12-hour watch keeping system, including weekends and public holidays.
  • Consider applicants with previous experience in marine navigation or port operations, with transferable skills considered from related backgrounds.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Relevant qualities, experience and certification as specified for the Marine Assistant role.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and communicate effectively.
  • Willingness to work a 12-hour shift schedule including weekends and public holidays.

Port of Blyth is the port operating division of Blyth Harbour Commission, an independent statutory trust established in 1882. It is one of the largest Trust Ports in the UK handling cargo across four terminals based around the River Blyth. Together with major logistics and training divisions, the Port group has a growing turnover exceeding £31 million, driven by growth across a variety of sectors but particularly offshore energy, with the Port now recognised as a major strategic east coast base supporting the sector. Other trade handled includes containers, dry bulks (coal, aggregates, cement etc.) and marine fuels.
