About Us

Porpoise Power is developing breakthrough tidal‑energy technology inspired by whale biomechanics and optimised for medium‑flow, shallow‑water sites. Backed by leading VCs and Innovate UK, our highly efficient fin‑driven generator system is moving from quarter‑scale trials to full‑scale deployment. We are a fast‑growing engineering team building a next‑generation, predictable renewable power source.

About the Role

As an Electrical Systems Engineer, you will lead the design and delivery of the power‑generation electrical architecture that converts fin‑driven mechanical motion into clean, grid‑compatible electricity. You will work across power conversion, protection, cabling, thermal management and electrical integration of our full‑scale tidal system.

  • Power‑System Design
    • Design and specify 3‑phase AC systems including generators, drives, converters, DC supplies, and protection devices.
    • Perform equipment sizing, protection coordination (fuses, MCCBs, DC–DC converters), and thermal considerations.
    • Lead system‑level power conversion architecture and subsystem integration.
  • eCAD & Electrical Documentation
    • Develop electrical schematics, block diagrams, SLDs, panel layouts and cable schedules.
    • Specify cabling, connectors, harness routing and enclosures for reliability in submerged or semi‑submerged systems.
  • Control‑System Integration
    • Work with PLC and control engineers to ensure seamless power‑system interaction with automation systems.
    • Review and support control logic (e.g. S7 Ladder/SCL) for protection, interlocks and fault handling.
  • Cross‑Disciplinary Collaboration
    • Partner closely with mechanical, software and modelling teams to validate interfaces, ensure compliance and support multidisciplinary design reviews.

Essential Skills

  • Experience with power‑generation systems and electromechanical drive trains (motors/generators).
  • Knowledge of industrial control systems.
  • Ability to manage electrical‑engineering schedules, risks and budgets.
  • Experience delivering systems from concept to commissioning.

Desirable

  • Marine or offshore electrical‑systems experience.
  • Knowledge of power‑electronics design or integration.
  • CAD experience (e.g. SolidWorks, AutoCAD).

Benefits

  • Pension Plans
  • Leave Package - 25 days + public holidays (England)
  • Work From Home - flexible hours
  • Training & Development
