Job Summary

We are seeking a dynamic and forward‑thinking neonatal Nurse with band 6 skills to support transitional care at New Cross Hospital. The role involves overseeing neonatal care across intensive, high‑dependency, special care and transitional cot areas, and contributing to a high‑quality, evidence‑based service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Practice within an ethical framework focused on the well‑being and safety of patients and clients.
  • Accountably assess care needs, develop personalised care plans, and implement and evaluate care without supervision.
  • Lead a team and coordinate the clinical area in the absence of the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse, reinforcing compassion, dignity and respect.
  • Act as a change agent, integrating evidence‑based practice to improve clinical effectiveness.
  • Support the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse to maintain a culture that protects patients from harm and ensures continuous quality improvement.
  • Promote a safe environment for staff, patients and visitors, ensuring compliance with health and safety, infection prevention, clinical governance, risk management and incident reporting.
  • Maintain high‑standard record‑keeping in line with NMC, HCPC, national legislation and local standards.
  • Administer medicines timely, observe patients, and communicate effectively with the multi‑professional team.
  • Assess risks, use protocols to minimise them, monitor standards, and take corrective action when required.
  • Report incidents and near misses promptly, taking action to minimise future risk.
  • Contribute to evidence‑based protocols, policies and clinical guidelines, and critically appraise research to improve practice.
  • Ensure an effective patient journey, planning and coordinating care, promoting safe discharge and optimising communication with inter‑disciplinary and inter‑agency teams.
  • Support continuous quality improvement through audit, patient feedback and team reflection.
  • Coordinate nursing/midwifery interventions, advise on clinical decisions, and monitor quality of care in the absence of the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse.
  • Advocate for patients, ensuring safe and harm‑free care and a culture of person‑centred care.
  • Work within non‑medical prescribing/administration standards where appropriate.
  • Maintain visible presence within ward/department, communicate with patients, relatives and carers, promote transparency and equality.
  • Develop care and services, support senior staff, and ensure effective systems to capture patient/carer feedback and manage complaints.
  • Treat everyone with dignity and humanity, show compassion and sensitivity in care.
  • Act as a positive role model, promote a supportive ethos, empower staff, and influence care delivery positively.
  • Support appraisal processes, personal development plans, workforce development, and professional revalidation.
  • Participate in change management, continuous improvement cycle, and robust communication networks.
  • Ensure health and safety and work collaboratively with colleagues, patients, and clients.
  • Support the learning and development of junior staff, including orientation, induction, and ongoing training.
  • Manage delegation, accept responsibility and accountability, and ensure compliance with professional standards.
  • Participate in recruitment, sickness, absence and performance management of the nursing team.
  • Support E‑rostering, KPI compliance, and contribute to organisational objectives.
  • Act up in the absence of the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse and support organisational culture and professional strategy.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

  • Neonatal Intensive Care Course (Qualified in Speciality)
  • Successful completion of Mentor or Supervisor and Assessor course
  • Evidence of further and continuous professional development (CPD)
  • 6 months post‑course experience on NNU
