The Royal Wolverhampton (RWT) & Walsall Healthcare (WHT) NHS Trusts are looking for a Group Associate Non-executive Director (NED) with extensive experience at Consultant level in medicine or an appropriate medicine related discipline. This is an exceptional opportunity to share your talents and expertise to make a positive difference to the lives of people served by the Trusts.

The Group Associate NED role is used successfully in the NHS to support Board succession strategy and achieving a balance of Board level skills. Associate NEDs cannot participate in any formal vote at Board. The successful candidates for the Associate NED roles will be appointed by the Trusts but may also be considered for appointment as a Group NED of the Group RWT & WHT Board in future, should a vacancy arise and they have the appropriate skills.

  • hold the executive to account by providing purposeful, constructive scrutiny and challenge
  • shape and actively support a healthy culture for the trust

Job responsibilities:

  • Commit to working to, and encouraging within the Trusts, the highest standards of probity, integrity and governance and contribute to ensuring that the Trusts internal governance arrangements conform to best practice and statutory requirements.
  • Provide independent judgement and advice on issues of strategy, vision, performance, resources and standards of conduct and constructively challenge, influence and help the board of directors develop proposals on such strategies.
  • In accordance with agreed board procedures, monitor the performance and conduct of management in meeting agreed goals and objectives and statutory responsibilities.
  • Ensure that performance and quality information is accurate, and that clinical governance and risk management systems are robust and defensible.
  • Take an active part in Board and other committees established by the board of directors to exercise delegated responsibility, as appropriate.
  • To participate in Board Assurance Walkarounds at the Trusts connecting and liaising with frontline staff and triangulating feedback with key Assurance data including Freedom to Speak Up.
  • Assist fellow directors in setting the Trusts strategic aims, ensuring that the necessary financial and human resources are in place for the Trusts to meet its objectives, and that performance is effectively monitored and reviewed.
  • Holding the Group Chief Executive and the executive team to account for the effective management and delivery of the organisations strategic aims and objectives.
  • Assist fellow directors in providing entrepreneurial leadership to the Trusts within a framework of prudent and effective controls, which enable risk to be assessed and managed.
  • Engage positively and collaboratively in board discussion of agenda items and contribute to constructive debate regarding the strategic development of the Trust and any other material and significant issues facing the organisations.
  • Undertake all training and development applicable to the role of an Associate Non-Executive Director and adhere to all relevant Policies and regulations of the Trusts.

Person Specification:

  • Clinical experience gained in either a medical, nursing or allied discipline with a strong service delivery background.
