About Popsa

Popsa is an award‑winning platform that uses AI to make it easy to transform your favourite memories into something beautiful and tangible. We’re a tech company, but we also craft tangible products that bring people joy. That intersection of digital and physical makes working here unique. Our iOS and Android apps are available in 12 languages, trusted by more than 12 million people who have created over 5 million photo books shipped to over 50 countries. With more than 350,000 five‑star reviews, we’re one of the highest‑rated consumer apps anywhere. Deloitte named us one of the UK’s fastest‑growing technology companies, and the Financial Times recognised Popsa among the Top 5 fastest‑growing software companies in Europe.

The opportunity

Popsa is moving into new creative territory. We’re building a library of ultra‑personalised illustrated artwork to bring a new dimension to our products, and we need someone brilliant to help us create it at scale. This is an AI‑native role. You’ll work with our designers to conceive and art‑direct distinct illustrative styles, and then use generative AI tools to produce coherent bodies of work. Fluency with AI image generation is a key part of this role, and we’re looking for someone who is excited by the opportunity that comes with that.

What you’ll do

  • Work with the Product Design team to define distinct illustrative styles, then own the process of producing them at scale
  • Build and manage an AI‑assisted production pipeline, using generative tools to create a large body of artwork
  • Maintain quality throughout, editing and correcting AI output with a sharp enough eye to know when it’s gone wrong
  • Design with localisation in mind from the start, so copy can be adapted for international markets
  • Bring informed opinions on tooling and workflow. We’re looking to learn from you
  • Collaborate with product design to ensure finished artwork integrates beautifully into the app

What we’re looking for

  • A strong illustrator or creative designer with a well‑developed visual sensibility and a portfolio of work to show for it
  • Flexibility across styles and visual languages
  • Genuine, hands‑on experience using AI image generation tools in a production context. We’re looking for AI‑fluency, not just familiarity.
  • The ability to think systematically about a visual language
  • Enough seniority to work with autonomy

Nice to have

  • An understanding of localisation constraints
  • Experience with product or UX/UI design

Details

  • COMPENSATION: Negotiable, depending on experience
  • ENGAGEMENT: Contract, with the potential to grow into a full time role as the project develops.
  • LOCATION: Preference will be given to applications that are London‑based.

TO APPLY: Send your portfolio and a short covering letter that includes your experience with generative AI tools to Careers@popsa.com

How to prepare for a job interview at Popsa

Showcase Your Portfolio like a Pro

Your portfolio is your calling card, so make sure it’s not just pretty but also tells a story. Arrange your best UX/UI design projects in a way that highlights your thought process, problem-solving skills, and the impact of your work. Talk about the challenges you faced and how you tackled them—freelancers need to show they can handle real-world problems.

Use Design Tools Effectively

Familiarity with design tools such as Figma, Sketch, and Adobe XD is crucial in our field. Be ready to discuss your experience with these tools in real scenarios. They might ask specific technical questions about how you’d approach a design problem or your workflow, so brush up on those details and think of examples from your previous freelance projects.

Prepare for Client-Centric Questions

As a freelancer, you'll be client-facing, so expect questions about handling client feedback and managing expectations. Prepare examples of how you've dealt with difficult situations or miscommunications in previous projects. Your ability to communicate effectively with clients is a major selling point, and it’s worth stressing how well you can read and meet their needs.

Demonstrate Flexibility and Self-Management

Freelance work requires a lot of self-discipline and time management. Be prepared to discuss how you organise your time, juggle multiple clients, and prioritise tasks. Sharing how you've successfully managed deadlines and client relationships in the past can really set you apart from the competition and show that you're more than just a designer—you're a complete package.
