Role Purpose
The Infrastructure Devops Engineer is responsible for designing, building, and operating automated pipelines that provision, configure, and manage edge computing servers at scale. The role operates across portfolio‑level SAFe architectural input down to hands‑on engineering, ensuring secure, reliable, and consistent delivery of edge infrastructure across distributed sites. This role bridges identity, networking, automation, Wintel, and OT/IT convergence while enforcing strong GitOps, IaC, and engineering discipline.
Strategic Responsibilities
- Contribute to enterprise and portfolio‑level design within a SAFe framework, ensuring edge automation aligns with wider platform strategy.
- Define standards, patterns, and guardrails for automated infrastructure delivery across distributed and bandwidth‑constrained edge locations.
- Collaborate with security, networking, platform, and OT teams to ensure architectural alignment and compliance with Zero Trust and operational requirements.
Infrastructure Automation & Edge Delivery
- Design, build, and maintain end‑to‑end automated pipelines that provision, build, configure, and validate edge compute servers from OS image creation to production deployment.
- Develop and maintain Packer image factories (Windows and Linux), integrating with GitHub/GitLab CI/CD.
- Create zero‑touch, repeatable build workflows using IaC (Terraform, Bicep, Ansible) and GitOps practices.
- Automate OS hardening, drivers, patching, compliance controls, policy enforcement, and post‑deployment configuration for all edge servers.
- Integrate security scanning, compliance checks, versioning, and artifact promotion into automated infrastructure pipelines.
- Build resilient deployment processes for offline, remote, or low‑connectivity edge environments.
Operations & Continuous Improvement
- Troubleshoot complex hybrid and distributed infrastructure issues across edge, on‑prem, and cloud environments.
- Optimise pipeline performance, image build speed, reliability, and resource usage.
- Maintain documentation, patterns, standards, and runbooks for automated edge delivery.
- Participate in incident response and provide engineering leadership during major infrastructure events.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Strong background in infrastructure automation, DevOps, or platform engineering.
- Packer experience, including building automated Windows/Linux images, provisioning, and template authoring.
- CI/CD experience with GitHub Actions and GitLab CI, including pipelines, runners, secrets, security scanning, and build governance.
- Solid Wintel engineering experience (Windows Server, Group Policy, AD/Entra ID, patching, configuration).
- Strong PowerShell scripting for build automation and configuration.
- Hands-on experience building and deploying edge compute infrastructure via automated workflows.
- Infrastructure‑as‑Code experience (Terraform, Bicep, Ansible or similar).
- Experience with firewalls, routing, segmentation, VPNs, and network security architecture.
- Understanding of OT/IT convergence, operational constraints, and security requirements.
- Comfortable working within a SAFe or scaled agile environment.
