Who are we? Polypipe Building Products are focused on delivering solutions to the residential sector. Polypipe Building Products works with national and local developers, plumbing and heating engineers, general builders and groundworkers to deliver above and below ground drainage systems, rainwater solutions as well as hot and cold plastic plumbing products.
About the role:
You will be responsible for maximising the productivity of the department by ensuring that all tooling is maintained and repaired to the highest standards, both mechanically and electrically.
Key responsibilities
- Carrying out tool checks in accordance with the plan, ensuring the tool is on the correct inserts, date stamps and to a good production standard (such as cavity finish) and addressing any issues from storage.
- Covering press breakdowns highlighted on Mattec to minimise machine downtime, including repairs or replacements to restore tooling to a runnable state and produce quality parts (e.g., stuck fittings, cavity and core polishing, seized ejection, worn parts such as angle pins or wear plates).
- Managing insert changes before or during press cycles, including removing cores, shells and inserts to create parts (e.g., socket/spigot).
- Tool servicing with full strip down and rebuild, checking for worn parts, replacing or repairing as required and reviewing last off sample for defects.
- Red tag logging of tools with issues for review and repair where possible.
- Turning new parts such as an angle pin, core pin, milling a locking block or other small tooling parts.
- Assessing a tool and moulded or extruded fittings to determine work required to improve it to the quality standard.
- Date and engraving pad changes.
- Changing damaged or faulty hot runner parts and rebuilding as needed.
- Water test tooling, checking hydraulics and repairing cylinder seals if parts are unavailable, arranging for related work to be captured with M&p.
- Strip, repair, polish, machine and rebuild extrusion tooling to the required production standard.
Skills & Experience we require
- The essentials: Ability to understand and use conventional machines such as lathes, milling machines, surface grinders, cylindrical grinders, band saws; competence with bench work and hand grinders.
- Knowledge and ability to measure and inspect parts and read engineering drawings.
- Metallurgical skills and knowledge of strength of materials.
- Experience of preventative maintenance on production tooling.
- Familiar with close tolerances using micrometers, dial test indicators, height gauges, bore micrometers and gauges.
- Ability to plan and lay out a variety of complex machine and bench operations related to tooling, jigs, fixtures, moulds, parts, gauges and equipment.
- Ability to work from samples, rough sketches, drawings or verbal instructions.
- Ability to work on in situ injection moulds or extrusion tooling.
- Apprentice trained toolmaker.
