Role: Chief Executive

Reporting to: The Chair and Board of Trustees

Direct Reports: Partnerships Manager, Project Support Officer

Location: Home based within Greater Manchester, with extensive and frequent travel around all areas of Greater Manchester. Occasional travel beyond this area.

Salary: £49,000 – £54,000 FTE

Hours: 30 hours per week (0.8 FTE) Flexibility to work hours which balance the needs of the charity against the work/life balance of the postholder.

About NW Hearts Charity

NW Hearts Charity is a young burgeoning charity with a big ambition – to improve heart

health outcomes across Greater Manchester.

There are around 7.6 million people living with heart disease in the UK. Heart and

Circulatory diseases account for 1 in 4 deaths in the UK. This figure is even higher in

Greater Manchester. The health of the people in Greater Manchester has been worse than

the England average for many years, with a higher number of risk factors for heart disease.

Although there are many examples of world-beating care and clinicians in Greater

Manchester, there is still significant variation in care. Not everyone gets the heart treatment they should receive at the time they really need it. Great care should be promoted and celebrated whilst inequities in care must change.

The Role

We are looking for a special person who has many talents, not least of which is to ensure

that the charity remains strong and resilient and able to deliver on its commitment; growing

and evolving to meet the needs of the people we serve.

The role is a mix of strategic leadership, operational duties and the building and nurturing of

external relationships.

This includes business planning, financial management, operational management,

fundraising, networking, line management and marketing. Working alongside a committed

Board of Trustees and skilled staff and volunteers, you will bring drive, innovation and

passion to the team. You’ll get terrific support from the outgoing postholder as needed,

with the space to act and bring your own ideas to the forefront.

Role Responsibilities to include:

  • To provide leadership by example, living the values of the charity and engendering a positive, open and highly supportive working environment; championing a ‘can do’ culture across the charity.
  • To oversee the day-to-day management of all areas of the charity, working cohesively with the team.
  • Create open communication channels with staff and volunteers to ensure that staff feel supported and valued. Set annual objectives which are regularly reviewed.
  • Champion a culture of innovation and fundraising within the NHS, corporates, ambassadors and supporters.
  • Be responsible for the day-to-day financial management within the charity, working closely with the Treasurer to prepare budget forecasts and financial reports to the Board.
  • Create the charity’s three-year strategic plan, ensuring that it maintains a clear case for support.
  • Remain up to date with both the legal obligations and best practice in fundraising, marketing and communications, including guidance from relevant regulators and ensuring that the charity is compliant.
  • Develop income generation and fundraising strategies to achieve sustainable income growth, ensuring that the charity identifies and grasps opportunities as they arise. Make applications to grant-making trusts as appropriate.
  • To work alongside the Board of Trustees to ensure that the Charitable Objectives are at the forefront of all plans and activities.
  • To support the trustees in their duties and inform decision-making in the best interests of the charity.
  • Create opportunities to build and nurture relationships with NHS colleagues to become ambassadors for our charity in their interactions with patients, families and communities.
  • Overall management of the charity’s grant-making function. This includes the setting up of funding rounds, liaison with potential and actual applicants and administrational support to the independent judging panel and successful grantees. Once awarded, the role includes completion of due diligence of recipients and monitoring and evaluation of all awarded projects.

  • Engaging and confident leader who can inspire and motivate those around them and who seeks opportunities to leverage the skills and goodwill of a range of supporters in a collaborative manner.
  • Be an effective ambassador for the charity, its aims, its values and its future development.
  • Excellent organisational and decision-making skills, with a high level of autonomy and an eye for detail.
  • Able to observe and respect confidentiality.
  • An innovator who can identify and grasp opportunities for income generation, brand growth and partnership working.
  • A proven record of achievement in a strategic leadership role in a not-for-profit or public sector organisation.
  • Experience of working with a Board.
  • Experience of managing staff and volunteers to achieve individual and organisational goals.
  • Have strong financial acumen with experience of managing budgets and financial practices.
  • Passionate, innovative and entrepreneurial thinker.
  • A positive, versatile and impact-focused professional.
  • An ability to nurture, influence and persuade, which naturally means you will have excellent people skills.
  • A calm individual with a cheerful disposition even when juggling many plates.
