Description
Overview of the role
- This role leads the Banking and FX tribe, which owns payment processing, FX pricing and trading, the ledger, reconciliation, bank integrations, FIX engine connectivity, payment compliance, and the client portal.
- You will manage six to eight engineers and own the tribe's delivery and OKRs. You'd work with product, design and stakeholders across the business to turn client problems into things we actually ship and support.
- This is not a fully hands-on role, but you need to be technical enough to help your team when they need it, review code, and break the tie when a decision has to be made.
Key Responsibilities
- Own delivery and OKRs for the tribe. Forecast it, sequence it, and say early when something is slipping.
- Work with product, design and stakeholders to turn client problems into shipped software. Push past the first solution someone offers to the problem underneath it.
- Take the parts of agile that create real agility: small changes, short feedback loops, and being able to change direction when a client need does. Drop the parts that are just ceremony.
- Manage up. Keep leadership and the people who need to know informed early, especially when the news isn't good.
- Lead a team of six to eight engineers, covering one-on-ones, progression and performance, plus hiring and onboarding as the team changes.
- Set a high bar and grow people into it. Mentoring, honest feedback, design and code review. Challenge people because you want them to be better, not to win the point.
- Set the tone on urgency and ownership by doing it yourself. Progress over perfection, and finish what the tribe starts.
- Share technical direction with the senior engineers. Run the discussion, break the tie when there is one, and make sure the decision gets written down.
- Hold the line on quality and testing standards. We'd rather do it right than do it twice.
- Improve the team's security posture. Who can reach what, and how quickly we shut things down when something surfaces.
- Run the tribe's services in production. Client money moves through them, so incident response, on-call health and observability are yours. Reviews are blameless, and what we learn has to change something.
- Decide how the team uses AI. We use Claude Code every day and want a manager with a view on where it helps and where it's quietly making a mess.
- Work with compliance and risk so changes to how money moves carry evidence. Where a process gets in the way of good engineering, argue for changing it.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Experience leading and managing engineers, including the hard parts: hiring, performance, and the conversations nobody enjoys.
