The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Engineering Manager with expertise in civil engineering and asset management.
This is an exciting opportunity to lead and develop an engineering department that integrates traditional engineering methods with cutting‑edge digital solutions.
The role involves overseeing asset inspections and infrastructure maintenance using modern technologies such as drone surveys, Li DAR scanning, and BIM modelling.
The ideal candidate will be a forward‑thinking leader, experienced in structural examinations, risk assessment, and competency management.
A passion for infrastructure asset management and digital transformation will be key to driving innovation.
This is a hands‑on role that combines technical expertise, leadership, and a commitment to training and mentoring junior engineers.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and develop the engineering department, integrating digital asset management solutions with traditional engineering best practices.
- Act as a Contractors Responsible Engineer (CRE) for infrastructure projects.
- Oversee competency management systems, ensuring alignment with industry standards such as NR/L2/CIV/1000.
- Lead the development and implementation of technical training programmes to upskill engineers and examiners.
- Conduct and manage condition assessments across multiple sectors (rail, highways, and infrastructure), providing expert recommendations for maintenance and repair.
- Provide technical leadership in asset inspections, ensuring accurate assessments and production of Interim Assessment Reports.
- Support tender preparation and contribute to commercial decision‑making, including project pricing and proposals.
- Manage and support engineering teams, including setting KPIs, personal development plans (PDPs), and weekly work schedules.
- Foster a culture of mentorship and continuous learning, guiding junior engineers and examiners through structured development plans.
- Maintain hands‑on involvement in on‑site asset inspections, ensuring high standards and preventing skill fade.
- Expand expertise in other engineering disciplines, including earthworks examinations, drainage assessments, and additional STE competencies.
Essentials we are looking for…
- Degree in Civil Engineering (BSc/BEng) or equivalent experience.
• Relevant industry certifications, such as
- STE02 Reviewing Engineer
- STE04 Structures Examiner
- STE06 Tunnel Engineer
- Competence Assessor Qualification
- Full UK driving licence
- Strong expertise in structural inspections, risk assessment, and remedial work recommendations.
- Experience leading technical teams, driving best practices in engineering operations.
- Ability to develop and deliver training programmes to support competency frameworks.
- Strong analytical and technical report writing skills, ensuring clarity in findings and recommendations.
- Proven experience in leading digital transformation projects in engineering and asset management.
- A level of travel will be required.
