Polaron is a spin-out from Imperial College London, founded by Dr Isaac Squires, Dr Steve Kench, and Dr Sam Cooper. The founders were united by their desire to harness engineering, artificial intelligence, and materials science to build the materials of the future. Our mission is to become the world leaders at the interface between AI and materials. Through relentless dedication to innovation and pragmatism, we aim to support the next generation of advanced materials critical to building a more sustainable future.

You’ll be joining a team of nine as a Senior Software Engineer. This role grants you a significant degree of autonomy, and influence over the development and direction of the platform and product. We’re building a cloud-based SaaS product that allows materials engineers to leverage state of the art image-based AI—focusing on an intuitive experience so users can achieve results with minimal effort.

Some of the things on our roadmap you might work on include:

  • Scaling our canvas-based image frontend to handle images with greater than 10k x 10k pixel resolution.
  • Intelligently autoscaling our GPU cluster in response to customer demand.
  • Building a public-facing API, in addition to our web-based interface.

We’re looking for exceptional people who can contribute to a fantastic company culture and help us grow Polaron, so if you feel like you could excel in this role, please get in touch!

You have:

  • 5+ years experience working as a product-focused software engineer.
  • A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, AI, Math, Physics, or similar – or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience writing well-tested, maintainable code with a statically typed programming language (TypeScript, Rust, Go, Java/Scala, etc).
  • A product-oriented mindset, comfortable engaging with customers, defining product features, and owning their delivery from start to finish.
  • Comfortable working across the technology stack. Our challenges vary from optimising performance of our data-intensive React frontend to provisioning cloud infrastructure in AWS using tools such as Terraform.
  • You’re a great technical communicator, and enjoy explaining complex concepts to others.

Bonus points if you have any of the following:

  • Experience building high-performance canvas web applications.
  • Experience developing complex data-driven visualisations with D3, or Observable Plot.
  • Experience designing and delivering on-prem cloud deployments.

Salary £85,000-130,000 depending on experience. Even if you don’t have 100% of the requirements above, please apply as we’re always looking for incredible people with diverse talents to join our team.

Interview structure:

  • Initial Video Call (20 mins): Discuss your experience and interest in the role with a member of the team.
  • Technical Pairing Exercise (1hr): Collaborative coding session via video call. This is a chance to see how we work on an engineering problem together.
  • Paid Trial Day: If selected as one of our top candidates, this is a chance to spend the day in our office collaborating with the team on a real engineering task.

We’re a largely office based company, with typically 4 days a week in office and 1 day WFH. However, we operate flexible working policies, so depending on a candidate's individual needs we can discuss an arrangement that works for you.

25 holidays a year + 2 “festive leave” days. Equity in a fast growing company. Gym membership. East London office @ Shoreditch Exchange Hoxton. Free barista coffee!
