That includes:

  • Building a consistent and trusting relationship with pupils
  • Supporting engagement with classroom learning
  • Working one-to-one and with small groups
  • Reinforcing expectations and agreed behaviour strategies
  • Helping pupils manage difficult moments and return to learning
  • Supporting the teacher with lessons and classroom organisation
  • Observing progress and sharing what you're seeing with teaching staff
  • Supporting extracurricular activities and school trips
  • Contributing during less structured parts of the school day
  • Setting or marking appropriate work under teacher guidance

And we'd like you to get involved. That could mean helping at lunchtime, supporting an enrichment activity, getting involved with Forest School or bringing an interest of your own into school life. We're Particularly Interested in Your Approach, Most importantly, you'll have the time to build meaningful relationships with the young people you're supporting rather than constantly starting again. Could You Be Their Consistent Adult? If you're patient, resilient and understand why relationships matter so much when supporting children with SEMH and complex needs, we'd like to hear from you.

Experience with SEMH and behaviour support will be important because relationships won't necessarily develop overnight. You'll need to know how to remain calm when a pupil is struggling, maintain appropriate boundaries and avoid taking challenging behaviour personally. We're looking for someone who can combine warmth with consistency. Ideally, you'll have:

  • Previous Teaching Assistant or comparable support experience
  • Experience supporting pupils with SEMH needs
  • Confidence using positive behaviour-management strategies
  • GCSE English and Maths at Grade C/4 or above
  • A good general educational background, ideally to A-Level
  • The confidence to use your initiative
  • A willingness to learn and continue developing professionally

At Elmy Hall School in Northwich, we're looking for a One-to-One Teaching Assistant who can provide that consistency.

You’ll spend the next 12 months getting to know the pupils you support properly, building the kind of professional relationship that can help a young person engage with education, develop confidence and begin to recognise what they’re capable of achieving.

Elmy Hall School We're a specialist school for up to 100 pupils aged 5-16 with a range of complex needs. For some of our pupils, previous experiences of education may not have been straightforward. That's why our approach considers the whole child. Academic progress matters, but so do emotional wellbeing, relationships, communication, independence and helping pupils develop the skills they'll need beyond school. Elmy Hall is part of the Polaris network of specialist schools, which has supported children and young people for more than 30 years. Schools across the network are rated Good or Outstanding by Ofsted.

Your Role Although this is a One-to-One Teaching Assistant position, you won't spend every minute sitting beside one pupil. Support needs to encourage participation and independence rather than create reliance. You'll provide individual support when it's needed, work with small groups of up to six pupils and contribute to the wider life of the school.

£21,257.48-£23,232.69 | Full-Time | Term-Time Only 12-Month Fixed-Term Contract Be the person they know will be there tomorrow. For a child who has found education difficult, consistency matters. Knowing who will greet them. Knowing what the boundaries are. Knowing there's an adult who understands when they're struggling - but who also knows when they're capable of more.

Alongside a salary of £21,257.48-£23,232.69, you'll receive:

  • Company pension
  • Life assurance
  • Employee discount scheme
  • Ongoing training and professional development
  • Support from an experienced specialist education team
  • A term-time working pattern
