Location: Birmingham (Hybrid – Initial office-based onboarding, transitioning to a flexible blend of home and office working)

Hours: Part-time (15–16 hours / 2 days per week – Flexible working pattern)

Salary: £15.38 – £17.95 per hour / £12,000 – £14,000 actual annual salary (Based on £30,000 – £35,000 FTE)

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced, autonomous Part-Time Bookkeeper / Accounts Manager to take full ownership of our finance function as a dedicated, standalone one-person department.

This is a key role managing our end-to-end day-to-day accounts—from transactional ledgers and credit control to monthly management accounts, VAT, PAYE oversight, and year-end audit support. We offer excellent flexibility around working hours and a hybrid working model once you are settled in the role.

Key Responsibilities

Weekly Duties:

  • Full management of Purchase, Sales, and Nominal Ledgers.
  • Entering supplier invoices and raising customer sales invoices.
  • Weekly bank reconciliations (recording all payments and receipts).
  • Preparing and raising weekly supplier payment runs.
  • Credit control: monitoring aged debtors and actively chasing outstanding balances.

Monthly & Quarterly Duties:

  • Reconciling our Invoice Factoring account.
  • Preparing and submitting quarterly VAT returns (MTD compliant).
  • Liaising with our external payroll bureau, posting monthly payroll journals, and ensuring timely HMRC payments for PAYE/NI.
  • Posting nominal journals (accruals, prepayments, and monthly adjustments).
  • Producing accurate monthly Management Reports for management review.

Yearly Duties:

  • Preparing year-end files and liaising directly with our external accountants.
  • Acting as the primary point of contact for annual financial audits or compliance checks.
  • Systems Migration: Assisting with our planned transition from Pegasus Opera to Xero at year-end.

Requirements & Experience

  • Experience: Proven track record in a standalone or senior bookkeeping/accounts role with end-to-end financial responsibility.
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of double-entry bookkeeping, management reporting, UK VAT rules, Making Tax Digital (MTD), and payroll/PAYE journals.
  • Software: Experience with Pegasus Opera is highly desirable. Experience with Xero (or experience assisting with software migrations) is a major advantage.
  • Attributes: Highly self-motivated, organized, and confident taking complete ownership of a finance function.

What We Offer

  • Flexible Hours: Spread your 15–16 hours across 2 full days or multiple shorter days to suit your schedule.
  • Hybrid Working: Flexible blend of home and office working following an initial on-site onboarding period.
  • Competitive Pay: Based on experience, with room to grow as our systems modernize.

How to Apply

Please submit your CV along with a brief covering letter outlining your experience with standalone bookkeeping and relevant software experience.
