Woodhouse College is a popular and oversubscribed 16–19 academy of around 1,500 full‑time students on a vibrant campus in North London and one of the top‑performing sixth form colleges in England. The College now seeks a Library Manager to join the team and run the library as a welcoming and interesting place to provide students with what they need to study, learn and research.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensuring a safe, calm, customer‑focused and high‑quality environment for all students.
- Managing student behaviour appropriately so that everyone can use the space effectively.
- Communicating what the library offers and how to access its resources.
- Selecting, acquiring and organising relevant, useful and up‑to‑date resources.
- Managing the library software and cataloguing systems and administering the daily loans of IT hardware so that stock is tracked, maintained and locatable.
- Managing the budget optimally, actioning annual improvement plans, and managing the team so that the facility is as effective for students as possible.
- Leading, managing, training and developing team members and helping recruit and induct new staff when necessary.
- Actively building relationships with staff in curriculum areas to review and develop the resources offered.
- Guiding students in research and referencing for their assignments, such as coursework and EPQ.
- Representing the library among other college services and reflecting the needs of others in the way the library works.
Skills and Experience
- A bachelor’s degree or equivalent (a Library or Information Science qualification is desirable).
- A vision for what makes an excellent library service and the ability to promote it.
- A warm and welcoming manner with excellent customer service skills.
- The confidence and people skills needed to oversee and manage the behaviour of young people courteously and assertively.
- Experience of successfully managing a library service in an educational environment.
- Financial and resource management experience.
- Experience of the successful management of a team.
- A thorough knowledge of the demands of a general A level programme and the ability to advise teachers and students on learning resources.
- The ability to work constructively with a wide range of staff and students in the interests of the service and developing students’ independent learning skills.
- High‑level written and oral communication skills.
- Fluency with and an interest in relevant IT and software and an interest in AI – the opportunities and challenges it poses for students and learning.
- Enthusiasm for personal development and the ability to inspire such enthusiasm in others.
- Very strong learning ethos and a positive workplace culture.
