Located in the heart of Manchester, The Union at MMU is part business, part charity, part membership body, with the aim of supporting and representing each one of its student members. The Union is now seeking an Education Development Lead to ensure the effective representation of the academic experience at Manchester Met.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leading on the Course Rep recruitment plan and training, including the delivery of the Lead Volunteer programme, maintaining a partnership approach to delivering the Course Rep scheme.
  • Supporting the Education Development and Communities Manager with any projects, consultations or research into the academic experience at Manchester Met.
  • Planning, managing and evaluating educational co-creation, ensuring collaborative and proactive academic representation processes are in place for the development of academic communities and Course Reps.
  • Coordinating and developing local education representation systems within communities that accurately and legitimately represent Manchester Met students and create positive change.
  • Leading on student representative recruitment, training and ongoing support, including communications, digital and physical resources, guidance and social activities.
  • Promoting, administering and monitoring systems evaluating the impact of student representation.
  • Facilitating the creation and development of academic communities to work with the university to shape their own experiences.
  • Assisting in key Students’ Union events, projects and activities throughout the year, including Welcome Week, elections and supporting the officers in delivering their plans.

Skills and Experience

  • Experience of volunteer management and support.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience of training provision.
  • A good understanding of the importance of belonging and the strength of community and co-creation in higher education.
  • Understanding of HE issues and issues affecting HE students.
  • Knowledge of representation and influence and the principles of governance and democracy.
  • A collaborator who can work as part of a team and with a wide variety of staff, students, and stakeholders.
  • Friendly, approachable and personable with the ability to create a welcoming and positive space.
  • Independent and self-reliant, able to use own initiative to manage workload and ensure personal deadlines are met.

26 days’ annual leave plus six discretionary days (four at Christmas and two at Easter) and bank holidays. Employer pension contribution matched up to 6%. Hours: 37 hours per week (these can be worked flexibly).
