The RNLI – the charity that saves lives at sea, 24 hours a day, every day – is looking for an Area Operations Manager to join the Wales, West and Isle of Man regional team, between Silloth and Lytham St Annes, to provide leadership, direction and support in an active maritime operational environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Leading and managing the people across your designated area to ensure the delivery of a safe, effective and inclusive lifeboat service.
- Ensuring the safe, efficient, and effective delivery of the RNLI's lifeboat services, both ashore and afloat, within a defined geographic area, in accordance with RNLI policies, standards, and external legislation.
- Ensuring the safe delivery of RNLI operations by working collaboratively with Lifesaving Technical colleagues.
- Recruiting, managing, supporting and developing a team of staff and volunteers.
- Ensuring all operational activities are completed in accordance with RNLI policies and procedures by conducting managerial assurance checks and through proactive and visible leadership, with attendance at Operations Team, Crew and Lifeboat Management Group meetings as appropriate.
- Managing and supporting lifeboat station operations, both ashore and afloat, resolving issues and escalating areas of concern.
- Maintaining an operational understanding and personal oversight, both afloat and ashore, of safe and efficient lifeboat operations.
- Ensuring effective reporting, risk mitigation and management, rectifying non-compliance as identified through audit.
- Providing mentoring, coaching and pastoral support to promote high-quality, inclusive environments, developing interpersonal relationships amongst staff, volunteers and external stakeholders, and proactively addressing incidents where expected behaviours are not displayed.
- Supporting operational colleagues with their professional development through the management of training and development requirements.
Skills and Experience
- Proven relevant knowledge, skills and/or experience of management in a dynamic operational environment (essential).
- IOSH/NEBOSH or relevant Safety, Health and Environment qualification (desirable).
- Significant proven experience (but not requiring formal qualification) in people management, coaching, influencing, mentoring, people-related investigations and demonstrable experience of working collaboratively (essential).
- Ability to plan and prioritise workloads, manage demand, and drive performance (essential).
- Experience in the maritime environment, for example as a marine operator, a beach lifeguard, or equivalent (desirable).
- Experience in an operational environment and working with external agencies (desirable).
- A track record of successful delivery in management roles, including both staff and volunteers (desirable).
- A demonstrable track record in driving improvement against clear and measurable targets, ensuring and monitoring compliance (desirable).
- An ability to motivate, lead, coach and have difficult conversations (essential).
- Flexible, inclusive, and able to balance good planning and preparation when dealing with the unforeseen (essential).
