Pod-Trak is seeking an experienced Senior Design Engineer – HV Cables to join our electrical engineering team. You will lead the design of high-voltage cable systems from feasibility to construction, supporting projects across the power, energy, and infrastructure sectors. The role involves technical leadership, coordination with clients and DNOs/IDNOs, and collaboration with civil and construction teams to ensure fully integrated project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design of high-voltage cable systems (11kV–132kV and above) from concept to detailed design
- Prepare route feasibility studies, cable sizing, thermal ratings, and design calculations
- Develop cable routing drawings, trench cross-sections, and joint bay details
- Liaise with DNOs, IDNOs, and consultants to ensure compliance with design standards and grid codes
- Review site surveys, geotechnical data, and constraints to optimise design layouts
- Produce design risk assessments and technical documentation in line with CDM regulations
- Provide design support during construction and commissioning phases
- Coordinate with civil, protection, and substation engineers to ensure cohesive design integration
- Support tenders with technical input, design estimates, and engineering methodologies
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to continuous design improvement processes
Requirements
- Degree-qualified in Electrical or Power Engineering (or equivalent experience)
- Proven experience in high-voltage cable design and installation (11kV–132kV or higher)
- Strong knowledge of cable rating calculations, protection coordination, and earthing systems
- Experience working to DNO, National Grid, and ENA standards
- Proficient in design software such as AutoCAD, Cymcap, or similar thermal modelling tools
- Excellent communication and coordination skills across multi-disciplinary teams
- Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards professional registration
- Knowledge of civil interface requirements for HV cable routing and joint bay design
- Experience working with ICPs or EPC contractors
- Understanding of BIM processes and digital design tools
