Plymouth Marine Laboratory are offering an exceptional opportunity to lead a passionate and skilled team of experts advancing cutting‑edge marine research, with a strong focus on marine modelling, data science and machine learning. As a key member of PML’s Science, Technology and Impact team, you will shape the strategic direction of your research area while working closely with the Ocean Challenge Leads to address the triple threats facing our oceans: biodiversity loss, marine pollution, and climate change.

Purpose of role: To lead the development and delivery of marine modelling, data science and machine learning research at PML, shaping the strategic scientific direction in collaboration with the Director of Science (DoS) and Chief Executive (CE).

Responsible for: Staff and students within the Environmental Intelligence Group (EIG)

Salary: (Principal Scientist) £60,603 – £70,263 per annum DOE

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Provide strategic leadership for the development, funding, and delivery of marine modelling, data science and machine learning research at PML.
  • Act as a member of the Science, Technology and Impact Team in formulating, managing, and delivering science strategies, policies, plans, and budgets.
  • Foster a research culture that achieves the highest standards of scientific excellence, innovation, and productivity.
  • Ensure the EIG maintains and develops the skills and expertise required to meet PML’s evolving scientific needs.
  • Lead and contribute to research proposals, securing competitive funding, and author high‑quality scientific papers and reports.
  • Manage, mentor, and support the professional development of staff and students within the EIG.
  • Work closely with operational teams to ensure seamless integration of scientific and organisational activities.
  • Build and sustain effective relationships with external partners, representing PML at local, national, and international levels.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of PML Applications, supporting and promoting its strategic objectives.
  • Take responsibility for health, safety, and wellbeing, ensuring compliance for yourself and for those under your management.
