3rd Line IT Engineer
Introduction
As one of the largest measurement survey companies in the UK, Plowman Craven provides a range of services to the property, rail and infrastructure markets. Our innovation, dynamic approach and commitment to delivering a flawless service is achieved by investing in and empowering our employees to push boundaries and reach new heights. Regardless of the size or complexity of a project, our clients trust us to provide a service that goes beyond their expectations.
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced and proactive 3rd Line Engineer to join our IT team, supporting our global IT infrastructure across on premises and cloud environments. This is an excellent opportunity for a technically skilled infrastructure professional who enjoys troubleshooting complex issues, improving system performance and contributing to the security and reliability of business-critical technology.
You will be responsible for providing advanced technical support, managing and maintaining our infrastructure and cloud services, and acting as an escalation point for complex technical issues. Working closely with the wider IT team and Security Engineer, you will play a key role in maintaining resilient, secure and efficient systems that support our people and operations across multiple sites.
What You'll Be Doing
-
Manage and maintain on-premises and hybrid infrastructure, including Windows servers, storage, virtualisation and networking, while monitoring performance and planning capacity.
-
Act as the primary escalation point for complex 1st and 2nd line support issues, applying your troubleshooting skills to identify root causes and implement effective solutions.
-
Configure, monitor and optimise cloud services across platforms such as Azure, AWS or equivalent, ensuring effective integration with on-premises systems and adherence to security best practices.
-
Administer and support our global file system, including Panzura or similar platforms, resolving issues relating to file replication, synchronisation, access and performance across multiple sites.
-
Work alongside the Security Engineer to identify, assess and prioritise endpoint vulnerabilities, coordinate remediation and monitor patch compliance.
-
Support the maintenance and monitoring of network security controls, including firewalls, VPNs and intrusion detection or prevention systems, helping to strengthen our overall security posture.
-
Support disaster recovery and business continuity planning, testing and documentation, while helping to improve data backup and archiving processes.
-
Plan, implement and document infrastructure changes in line with established processes, ensuring systems remain reliable, secure and well maintained.
What We're Looking For
-
Proven experience in a 3rd line IT support or infrastructure engineering role, with the ability to independently investigate and resolve complex technical issues.
-
Strong knowledge of Windows Server environments, large-scale storage systems, server virtualisation and networking infrastructure.
-
Hands-on experience configuring and managing cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure, AWS or equivalent.
-
Experience supporting global file systems or distributed storage platforms, ideally Panzura or a similar solution.
-
Experience with endpoint vulnerability management, security patching and remediation processes, with an understanding of standards such as Cyber Essentials, Cyber Essentials Plus and ISO 27001.
-
Strong analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with the ability to communicate technical information clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
-
Excellent organisational and documentation skills, with experience recording technical processes, procedures and infrastructure changes.
-
Knowledge of network security tools and principles, particularly Fortinet firewalls and Extreme switches, would be advantageous. Relevant certifications such as Microsoft Azure, AWS, ITIL or CompTIA Security+ are also desirable.
