About Pleo
Messy spend management is tricky business. And tedious processes are a lose-lose situation for all involved, not just finance. At Pleo, we're changing that. We build spend solutions that make managing money seamless, empowering, and surprisingly effective for finance teams and employees alike - with a vision to help all businesses ‘go beyond’. The word ‘Pleo’ actually means ‘more than you’d expect’, and living by that mantra has been the secret to our success over the last 10 years.
Now, we’re at a pivotal moment in our journey; every move we make has a direct impact on our 40,000+ customers, our business, and our collective success. We need people who take pride in uncovering customer needs, who turn complex problems into simple solutions, challenge the way things are done (respectfully), and always aim high. With great ambitions driving us forward, we can’t say we’ve got this whole thing figured out. And frankly, that’s half the fun! What we can say is that we’re a driven, progressive, and, importantly, a kind bunch of 850+ people from over 100 nationalities, all committed to delivering the future of business spending, together.
About the role
We're looking for a Frontend Software Engineer to join our Control Mechanism team at Pleo. Control Mechanism sits at the heart of how Pleo manages spend control. We build the tools that monitor employee expenses, reviewers approve them, finance teams enforce limits, and admins configure the rules that govern it all. It's a high-stakes domain where correctness matters: the logic is complex, the edge cases are real, and the impact of getting it right is felt directly by our customers.
In this role, you'll work primarily on frontend surfaces across our web and mobile products, but you'll be most effective if you're genuinely curious about the systems underneath them. Our work involves as much investigation and business logic reasoning as it does UI building, and the engineers who thrive here are the ones who want to understand why the data looks the way it does, not just how to display it.
What you’ll be doing
- Build and maintain features across web and mobile surfaces for expense review, approval workflows, and spend controls.
- Investigate and debug complex issues involving business logic, permissions, and data across multiple services. A significant and rewarding part of the day-to-day!
- Collaborate with backend engineers, product managers, and designers to deliver features end-to-end.
- Contribute to technical decisions and help shape how we evolve our architecture, including ongoing work migrating from our legacy monolith to newer microservices.
- Partner with other Pleo teams whose features and services live within our domain.
What you bring
- Solid experience with frontend development, ideally with React and React Native for mobile development.
- A genuine curiosity for how systems work end-to-end. Not just what the UI renders, but why the data looks the way it does and how permissions shape what users can and can't do.
- Full-stack experience, or alternatively a sound understanding of backend services, APIs, and data flows. This is a significant advantage in our domain, and a strong willingness to invest in it counts equally.
- Strong investigation skills: comfortable digging into unfamiliar code, reasoning about data models, and forming hypotheses about what's broken and why.
- Business and product awareness: the ability to understand not just the technical specification but what the customer is actually trying to accomplish, and to flag when a solution doesn't serve the underlying need.
- A methodical approach to testing and shipping: in a domain where regressions have real customer impact, we value engineers who test thoroughly and merge with confidence.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- A background in fintech or complex permissions systems is a plus, as is a genuine passion for innovation, both in product and in how teams work; we're actively iterating on how we use Claude and other LLM tools in our day-to-day, and we value people who bring that same curiosity to the way they work, not just what they build.
Who you’ll be working with and reporting to
You will report to our Senior Engineering Manager for the Spend Controls area. The Control Mechanism team has 6 engineers with a range of strengths across frontend, backend, and full-stack development. You'll work particularly closely with our Senior Frontend Engineer, an experienced collaborator who will help you onboard into the domain and share frontend ownership with you. You'll also partner regularly with our PM, designers, and engineers from other Pleo teams, as our features touch nearly every area of the product.
How you’ll develop in this role
- Build a deep understanding of Pleo's spend management product: how expenses work, how approval flows are structured, how limits and controls interact across different user roles and company configurations.
- Take ownership of frontend features end-to-end, from design collaboration through to shipping and monitoring.
- Grow your full-stack fluency with the support of experienced engineers who will help you develop backend and systems knowledge alongside your frontend expertise.
- Begin contributing to architectural decisions as we continue evolving our infrastructure and expanding the scope of what Control Mechanism owns.
We’re committed to helping you develop your career, whether that means taking on bigger projects, stepping into leadership, or acquiring new skills in other areas.
