Are you a newly qualified or part qualified Solicitor looking for an in-house role with a varied workload across a range of commercial and legal matters? Play Sports Network is looking for an In-House Solicitor/Legal Executive to join us, working closely with the Commercial team, CEO, FD, HRD, and other senior managers.

You’ll have the opportunity to oversee all legal and regulatory aspects of the Company’s operations, including commercial partnerships, investments, employment law, and property matters. You’ll also be able to work across 2 companies based at the same HQ in Bath, either Play Sports Network Ltd or SHIFT Active Media Ltd. You’ll provide the Board with advice to protect the commercial and reputational interests of the Company in all areas that have a legal or regulatory dimension.

We are media industry specialists in the cycling and triathlon space. An interest in cycling is not essential, but if you love cycling, there will be plenty of opportunities to engage with others on your passion.

Our full-time working hours are Monday to Friday, 9am to 5.30pm, but we are also open to receiving applications from candidates who are interested in working part-time. These candidates should note on their application what working hours they are able to offer.

Your Key Responsibilities

  1. Working closely with commercial management to negotiate and execute commercial agreements with Brand Partners and a range of other counterparties (rights holders, key suppliers to the business, etc.);
  2. Working with the CEO, FD & HRD on business development projects; and with the SHIFT Active Media management team, as required.
  3. Maintaining precedent commercial agreements and overseeing the day-to-day preparation of agreements;
  4. General legal advice, supporting senior management across a range of employment, property, regulatory (including advertising/broadcast), and insurance matters.
  5. Liaising with external counsel, where necessary, to obtain and consolidate advice.
  6. Data protection due diligence (for example, when onboarding new suppliers or implementing new procedures) and oversight of responses to data subject rights requests;
  7. Managing the company’s IP including trademark registrations and liaising with external counsel to register and maintain our portfolio of international registrations;
  8. Developing consumer terms & conditions and privacy policies for our digital products and ensuring general compliance with local legal and data regulations in various jurisdictions;
  9. Dispute resolution including pre-action correspondence in cases of IP infringement and any general commercial issues with clients, suppliers, or other third parties.

Skills, experience and aptitudes

  1. (Part) Qualified solicitor.
  2. A decent grounding in commercial law either in private practice or in-house.
  3. Ability to quickly understand the drivers behind a project, the associated risks, and give concise, commercial advice.
  4. Ability to effectively delegate and supervise to balance day-to-day work with longer-term/strategic projects and ad hoc queries.
  5. Ability to work with people across all aspects of a business including Board level and senior management.
  6. Broad familiarity with data protection laws and their application in a commercial and consumer context.
  7. Assertiveness in commercial negotiations and when providing internal advice.

Preferred

  1. Experience of media, agency, IP licensing, and/or sponsorship would be helpful but not essential.
  2. Experience in employment legal matters.
  3. Interest in cycling and/or media would be an added bonus, but is not essential.
  4. Foreign languages (in particular European) are helpful.
