Temporary (Approx 9 weeks) £14.07 per hour

Main Purpose

The post holder will provide customer service support to individual and group patrons of the Leisure Centre, to help ensure visitor comfort, safety and enjoyment. This includes, as required during shift, fitness instruction/fitness classes (where qualified), gym supervision, coaching and swimming instruction (where qualified), lifeguarding and cleaning and upkeep of facilities as required.

Main Roles and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for undertaking lifeguarding duties, as determined by rota, to professionally recognised standards:
    • Keeping a close watch over the pool, associated features (eg flume, leisure area, health suite and soft play area etc) and the users, exercising the appropriate level of control
    • Communicating effectively with facility users and colleagues
    • Anticipating problems and preventing accidents
    • Intervention to prevent unsafe behaviour
    • Identifying emergencies quickly and taking appropriate action
    • Carrying out rescues from the water and associated features
    • Giving immediate First Aid to any casualty
    • Supervising a variety of facilities and water based activities; swimming tuition, fitness training, diving, school activities, aqua aerobics, canoeing, water polo, sub-aqua etc.
    • Assisting with crowd control, including the evacuation of the building in an emergency
  • Responsible for maintaining a strong personal swimming ability, and an appropriate level of physical fitness, to facilitate safe and effective water rescues.
  • Undertake a range of duties at Leisure Centre and other recreational facilities, to include:
    • Patrolling, supervision and security of assigned facilities (to include pool, leisure area and soft play area etc)
    • Emergency Response
    • Assembling and dismantling all equipment to be deployed at the facility
    • Cleaning and Housekeeping
    • Customer Service & Hospitality
    • Promotional Public Relations Activities
    • Access Control
    • Traffic Control
  • Responsible for applying Pool / Centre Safety Operating Procedures, Normal Operating Procedure and Emergency Action Plan to direct the behaviour and oversee the general safety of the public.
  • Responsible for undertaking the duties of First Aider, with due care to the needs of the recipient, to standards recognised by Council as compliant with relevant legislation and / or Approved Codes of Practice.
  • Perform emergency Basic, Advanced and Extended Life Support duties, and provide appropriate aftercare, by the application of Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation techniques in accordance with European Resuscitation Council, and / or by the competent use of Oxygen Insufflation Devices and Automated External Defibrillators.
  • Ensure safe management of spinal injuries by team deployment of spinal injury board in accordance with specialised training moderated by the Institute of Qualified Lifeguards.
  • Carry out the role of Swimming Instructor / Group Exercise Coach / Fitness Instructor (where qualified) as instructed by Line Management. All duties to be carried out in line with Industry guidelines, NOPs and best practice.

Essential Criteria:

  • Hold a current RLSS National Pool Lifeguard Qualification, assessed at 2 metres (or more) and includes spinal or rescue board or PXB assessment or equivalent nationally recognised qualifications.
  • 6 months' working experience in a customer facing role.
  • 6 months' working experience of cleaning duties within a public venue or commercial building.
  • Please confirm you are flexible to work a range of hours which may include evenings, weekends, public holidays and early mornings.
  • Willing to attend on-going training to maintain National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (or be willing to attend on-going training on receipt of NPLQ qualification).
  • Have the ability to maintain written work records.
