Down Leisure Centre, Downpatrick

Temporary (Approx 8 weeks) £15.74 per hour Casual Hours

Main Purpose

To be responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive and structured programme of swimming lessons. To promote physical well-being and improved health through swimming teaching activities.

Main Roles and Responsibilities

  • To develop, adapt and deliver suitable structured programmes of lessons for the public, schools and other groups as per the recognised national standards.
  • To develop work programmes with realistic targets for groups and to prepare pupils for examination to suit their levels of ability.
  • To comply with Safety in Swimming Pool Regulations and internal procedures including supervision, hygiene and safety procedures. When not performing teaching to provide cover and undertake lifeguarding duties.
  • To follow agreed accident procedure and administer first aid if required.
  • To undertake all associated administrative duties including class attendance, records of pupils progress and examination documentation.
  • To ensure equipment is in a safe condition and any defects reported immediately. To reorder stock as required.
  • To organize and supervise swimming galas as required.
  • To maintain an up to date awareness of matters relating to swimming instruction.
  • To ensure that all swimming instruction complies with the services quality systems.
  • To ensure that Corporate policies and procedures are adhered to at all times.

Essential Criteria:

  • A current Level 2 ASA Swimming Instructor qualification or STA Swimming Certificate or equivalent qualification.
  • Current RLSS National Pool Lifeguard Qualification, assessed at 2 metres (or more) and includes spinal or rescue board or PXB assessment or equivalent nationally recognised qualifications.
  • A current recognised First Aid at Work Certificate (e.g. British Red Cross, St John's Ambulance, Order of Malta).
  • 6 months working experience in a customer facing role.
  • Previous experience of teaching swimming to individuals and/or groups in a structured environment to include developing and delivering lesson plans.
  • Previous working experience as a Lifeguard.
  • Previous working experience of cleaning duties within a public venue or commercial building.
  • Have a good knowledge of: Role of Lifeguard, Role of Swimming Instructor, Workplace Health & Safety, First Aid.
  • Ability to keep accurate records of training and competency.
