Deckhand/Able Seaman assist in various fishing operations and ensure the safety and efficiency of fishing activities. A vital, experienced member of the deck crew responsible for the safe operation, maintenance, and navigation of a vessel. Reporting to the Chief Officer, maintains the ship's exterior, handle mooring, and assist with cargo.
Key Responsibilities
- Fishing Operations: Assist in setting and retrieving fishing gear (nets, lines, traps), help with the sorting and handling of catch and maintain equipment and ensure it is in good working order.
- General Deck Duties: Perform maintenance on the boat, including cleaning and painting, assist in mooring and anchoring the vessel and keeps the deck organized and free of hazards.
- Safety and Compliance: Adhere to all safety regulations and procedures on board, participate in safety drills and training and ensure safety equipment is functional and properly stored.
- Teamwork and Communication: Collaborate effectively with other crew members, report any issues or concerns to the captain or senior crew member, maintains a positive and professional attitude at all times.
- Record Keeping: Assist with maintaining logs of catch and equipment usage and contributes to reports on fishing activities and outcomes.
- Safety Compliance: Follow health and safety guidelines to prevent contamination and ensure a safe working environment.
Qualifications
- Previous experience as a deckhand or in a maritime environment is advantageous but not essential.
- Familiarity with fishing practices and equipment is a plus.
- Valid STCW certification and medical certificate (or willingness to obtain).
- Ability to work long hours in various weather conditions.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills.
- Basic first aid knowledge is desirable.
