Overview
A manufacturing organisation producing engineered mechanical products is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to support the development of new products and the improvement of existing product ranges. You will work across the full design lifecycle – from concept through detailed engineering and production handover – collaborating closely with cross‑functional teams to ensure products are delivered to specification, on time and for manufacture.
Key Responsibilities
- Generate detailed mechanical designs for new products and modifications to existing product lines
- Define engineering requirements and ensure designs are production‑ready for manufacture
- Work across internal departments (Development, Production Engineering, Purchasing) to ensure design‑for‑manufacture (DFM) is embedded before release
- Determine suitable manufacturing methods for designs considering internal capabilities and external suppliers
- Perform DFMEA activities, tracking actions and working with development teams on failure modes and mitigations
- Conduct tolerance analysis for efficient manufacture, correct function, and assembly feasibility
- Produce and maintain accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs) during the design process for cost and production purposes
- Collaborate with Production Engineering to optimise product cost, quality, and manufacturing efficiency
- Maintain progress documentation and provide updates to support new product development workflows
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or strong proven mechanical engineering background)
- Demonstrated experience taking mechanical products from prototype through to production
- Knowledge of sheet metal design and sheet metal manufacturing processes
- Experience generating DFMEA reports and implementing resulting actions
- Competence performing tolerance stack‑up analysis and resolving design concerns
- CAD proficiency – experience with Solid Edge preferred (SolidWorks acceptable)
- Ability to produce 2D production drawings in line with GD&T best practices
- Experience applying design‑for‑manufacture principles
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Proficient with Microsoft Office tools
- Able to work to defined standards within an ISO9001:2015 environment
Desirable Experience
- Familiarity with folding simulation software
- Prior experience producing manufacturing cost data via BOM structures
- Understanding of cross‑functional NPD processes
- Structured and organised approach with ability to prioritise workloads
- Continuous learner with effective teamworking skills
