About us

Planex Controls is a UK-based Project Management & Controls consultancy supporting complex engineering and construction projects. We provide project controls, planning, construction management and commissioning support to enable clients to improve delivery certainty across cost, schedule, HSE and quality.

Right to work (IMPORTANT)

Unfortunately, we are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this role. Applicants must already have the right to work in the UK and be able to provide evidence of this before employment begins.

About the role

We are looking for a bright, organised and motivated Trainee Project Controller to join our growing business. This is an entry‑level role, so previous project management experience is not required. What matters most is that you are good with numbers, quick to learn, well organised, confident using a computer, and keen to build a career in project support, project controls or business administration.

You will work closely with the business owner and be trained in multiple Project service skillsets such as Project Planning, Estimating, Quantity Surveying, and procurement. This role would suit a school leaver, college leaver, graduate, career changer or someone already working in admin who wants to move into project support.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Software packages such as Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, Navisworks, and a range of different engineering applications.
  • Updating spreadsheets, trackers and project records.
  • Preparing reports and document packs.
  • Taking meeting notes and tracking actions.
  • Chasing information from clients, suppliers and project teams.
  • Keeping files, folders and documents organised.
  • Supporting diary management and follow‑ups.
  • Helping maintain CRM and contact records.
  • Assisting with invoices, purchase orders and basic commercial admin.
  • Supporting project planning, cost tracking and reporting tasks over time.
  • Helping improve internal processes and templates.
  • Working on tender packages.

As you develop, your skill set will become more specialised and your training will be catered to the work discipline you pursue.

What we’re looking for:

  • Good with numbers and comfortable using spreadsheets. A high grade in mathematics will be advantageous.
  • Organised, reliable and able to follow tasks through properly.
  • A fast learner with strong attention to detail.
  • Confident writing clear emails and notes.
  • Comfortable speaking to clients, suppliers and colleagues.
  • Practical, switched on and willing to ask questions.
  • Able to manage confidential information professionally.
  • Interested in construction, engineering, project management or business operations.

You do not need to know everything already. We are looking for the right attitude and ability to learn.

Career Progression

The successful candidate will be in an advantageous position of starting work with a growing consultancy where career progression is uncapped. Annual pay reviews will be offered and salary will be increased.

Useful skills:

  • Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets.
  • Word, Outlook and general Microsoft Office skills.
  • Experience in admin, customer service, construction, engineering or office support.
  • An interest in project management, planning, cost control or construction delivery.

Important note

We are working with local employability partners to make this opportunity accessible to people starting out their career. Eligible candidates may be offered support through Edinburgh’s Employer Recruitment Incentive, subject to external funding criteria and candidate consent.
