About the Role:
We are currently seeking an experienced Paediatric Clinical Research Nurse to support an urgent clinical research study involving boys aged 4–23 living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). This is a patient-facing role involving home/community-based clinical visits. The successful nurse will be one of a small team assigned to patients and will provide primary clinical support and back-up as required. There is also potential for ongoing work across additional clinical research projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct clinical research visits with paediatric patients in their homes/community settings.
- Perform venepuncture using a butterfly needle, with current and demonstrable competency.
- Undertake IV and infusion-related procedures where required.
- Perform port access and other relevant clinical procedures.
- Complete symptom-directed physical assessments, including monitoring for signs of vasculitis.
- Accurately document clinical findings and study-related activities.
- Follow study protocols, SOPs and all applicable clinical research requirements.
- Maintain high standards of patient safety, safeguarding and clinical care.
- Work collaboratively with the wider clinical research team.
Essential Requirements:
- Fully NMC Registered Paediatric Nurse (RSCN/RCN).
- Current, active clinical experience in paediatrics.
- Enhanced DBS with a preference for candidates registered on the DBS Update Service.
- Current competency in paediatric venepuncture using a butterfly needle.
- Competency in IV/infusion procedures.
- Port access competency.
- Ability to provide competency evidence/sign-off for relevant clinical skills.
- Experience working with children and young people across relevant age groups.
- Able to undertake visits on Thursdays and Fridays.
- Based within approximately one hour of Coventry and able to travel to patient visits.
- Strong communication, documentation and patient-facing skills.
Clinical Competency Evidence:
Candidates will need to clearly demonstrate recent clinical competency across the required procedures. Applications should quantify experience wherever possible, including:
- Venepuncture – frequency, duration and age groups treated.
- IV/infusion experience.
- Port access.
- Physical assessments.
- Experience working with children with complex or serious conditions.
- Confirmation that competencies have been practiced within the past 6–12 months.
Patient Population:
The study involves boys aged 4–23 with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, including patients who may be significantly unwell and have limited mobility. Experience working with children with DMD, neuromuscular disorders, complex care needs or similarly medically complex conditions would be highly advantageous.
DBS & Interview Requirements:
Candidates should ideally have an Enhanced DBS on the Update Service to support a fast start. Candidates progressing to interview should be prepared to provide:
- DBS certificate/code details
- Passport
- Driving license
- Utility bill
