Permanent | Part-Time | Sussex Placr Recruitment is recruiting for an experienced Charity Accountant / Finance Manager to join a well-established, purpose-led charitable organisation in Sussex. This is a varied and hands-on position with responsibility for the charity’s day-to-day financial operations, management accounts, budgeting, regulatory compliance and financial reporting. Working closely with the senior leadership team, Treasurer and Board of Trustees, you will provide accurate and meaningful financial information to support both operational and strategic decision-making. The position would suit an experienced charity finance professional who enjoys being hands-on and is comfortable working across transactional finance, management accounting and higher-level reporting. The Role You will be responsible for maintaining the nominal, purchase and sales ledgers in Xero and ensuring financial transactions are accurately recorded and reconciled. You will prepare monthly management accounts, including balance sheet reconciliations, accruals, prepayments, deferred income and accrued income. A key part of the position will be ensuring compliance with Charity SORP and FRS 102 and managing both restricted and unrestricted fund accounting. You will ensure restricted income and expenditure is correctly recorded and complies with relevant funding and donor agreements. Working with budget holders, you will prepare annual budgets and financial reforecasts and provide monthly financial reports and commentary to senior leadership and trustees. You will monitor cash flow and liquidity, complete bank reconciliations, process payments and monitor aged receivables. The position will also involve managing the financial processing of donations, grants and fundraising income and supporting financial reporting to grant funders. You will review and strengthen internal financial controls and processes, helping to safeguard the charity’s assets and minimise financial risk. You will liaise with external auditors and coordinate the year-end accounts and audit process. The role will also take responsibility for payroll processing and HMRC compliance from April 2027. About You You will ideally be ACCA, ACA or CIMA qualified, although candidates who are qualified by experience with substantial charity finance experience will also be considered. You should have strong working knowledge of Charity SORP and FRS 102, together with practical experience managing restricted and unrestricted funds. You will have experience preparing monthly management accounts, budgets, forecasts and year-end information and be comfortable liaising with external auditors. Knowledge of charity taxation, including Gift Aid and VAT, is important. Strong working knowledge of Xero and Excel is required. You should be confident communicating financial information to non-finance colleagues and senior stakeholders and be comfortable working directly with trustees and senior leadership. This position requires someone who is proactive, accurate and practical, with the willingness to remain hands-on with day-to-day finance while also providing higher-level financial reporting and analysis. Experience preparing financial reports for major grant funders, including charitable trusts or the National Lottery, would be advantageous. Previous experience within an education, sport, community or similar purpose-led organisation would also be beneficial. The Opportunity This is an excellent opportunity to take on an important part-time finance position within an established charitable organisation where your work will directly support its continued development and long-term financial sustainability.
