About the Role
Our client, a leading fintech company dedicated to revolutionizing financial services, is actively seeking a meticulous and experienced Legal Officer specializing in Financial Regulation to join their fully remote legal team. This role is central to ensuring the company's adherence to the complex and evolving regulatory framework governing financial services in South Africa and other target markets. The successful candidate will be responsible for interpreting and implementing financial regulations, managing compliance processes, and advising on all legal aspects related to fintech operations. We are looking for a proactive and detail-oriented legal professional with a deep understanding of financial services law and a passion for working in a fast-paced, innovative, and remote-first environment, supporting global operations from East London.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor, interpret, and advise on the application of financial services regulations, including those from the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) and other relevant bodies.
- Develop and implement robust compliance policies and procedures to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements.
- Manage regulatory filings, reporting, and communication with supervisory authorities.
- Conduct legal research on regulatory changes and assess their impact on the business.
- Advise on product development and marketing initiatives to ensure regulatory compliance.
- Assist in managing relationships with external legal counsel and regulatory bodies.
- Support internal audits and reviews of compliance frameworks.
- Contribute to risk management strategies related to financial regulation.
- Provide training to staff on regulatory obligations and best practices.
Requirements
- Admitted Attorney or qualified legal professional with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in financial services regulation.
- Strong understanding of South African financial services legislation (e.g., FAIS Act, FICA, POPIA) and regulatory frameworks.
- Experience with fintech, digital banking, or payment systems is highly advantageous.
- Excellent analytical, research, and problem-solving skills.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities, with the capacity to articulate complex regulatory requirements clearly.
- Proficiency in legal research databases and secure remote collaboration tools.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines in a remote setting.
- High level of integrity, attention to detail, and commitment to compliance.
- Ability to adapt quickly to changing regulatory landscapes and business needs.
