About the Role
Our client, a dynamic and innovative architectural firm with a significant portfolio of retail and commercial projects, is seeking a Principal Retail & Commercial Architect to join their East London, Eastern Cape office. This senior leadership position requires a visionary architect with a proven track record in designing impactful retail environments, shopping centers, and commercial complexes. You will lead design teams, manage client relationships, and oversee projects from concept through to execution, ensuring exceptional design quality and commercial success. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of retail design principles, customer experience, and market trends. This role operates under a hybrid work model, offering a blend of collaborative office time in East London and remote flexibility.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the architectural design and conceptualization for a range of retail and commercial projects, including shopping malls, flagship stores, and mixed-use commercial developments.
- Manage and mentor design teams, fostering a culture of innovation, creativity, and technical excellence.
- Engage directly with clients, retailers, developers, and marketing teams to understand brand requirements and commercial objectives.
- Oversee the preparation of detailed architectural plans, specifications, and tender documentation for retail and commercial spaces.
- Conduct site analyses, feasibility studies, and market research to inform design strategies for retail developments.
- Ensure designs are functional, aesthetically appealing, customer-centric, and commercially viable.
- Liaise with specialist consultants (e.g., branding, lighting, merchandising) to create cohesive and engaging environments.
- Present design proposals and project strategies to clients, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies.
- Stay informed about the latest trends in retail design, consumer behavior, and commercial real estate.
Requirements
- Master's degree in Architecture or equivalent professional qualification.
- A minimum of 10 years of extensive experience in architectural practice, with a strong specialization in retail design and commercial architecture.
- Demonstrated experience in a leadership role, successfully delivering large-scale retail and commercial projects.
- Proven ability to translate brand identity and customer experience requirements into compelling architectural designs.
- Expert proficiency in architectural design software, including Revit, AutoCAD, and advanced visualization tools.
- Strong understanding of South African building codes, zoning laws, and planning regulations relevant to East London and the Eastern Cape.
- Excellent leadership, communication, negotiation, and client management skills.Ability to work effectively in a hybrid work environment, balancing office collaboration with remote autonomy.
