About the Role

This role is crucial for ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, monitoring environmental impacts, and implementing best practices across their operations. You will be responsible for a range of activities including water quality monitoring, air emissions assessment, waste management, and rehabilitation planning. This position operates on a hybrid model, requiring regular on-site presence at operations near East London, Eastern Cape, ZA, alongside remote work for data analysis, reporting, and program development. The ideal candidate will possess a strong scientific background, practical experience in environmental management within the mining industry, and a thorough understanding of relevant environmental legislation. You will work closely with operational teams, regulatory bodies, and external consultants to maintain high environmental standards and promote responsible resource development. This is an important role for someone dedicated to environmental stewardship in the mining sector.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement environmental monitoring programs for air, water, soil, and biodiversity.
- Conduct regular site inspections and environmental audits to ensure compliance with permits and regulations.
- Collect, analyze, and interpret environmental data, preparing comprehensive reports for internal and external stakeholders.
- Assess the environmental impact of mining activities and propose mitigation strategies.
- Manage and oversee waste management programs, including hazardous and non-hazardous waste.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of mine closure and rehabilitation plans.
- Liaise with government regulatory agencies, providing necessary documentation and facilitating site visits.
- Respond to environmental incidents and emergencies, developing corrective action plans.
- Stay updated on environmental legislation, policies, and industry best practices.
- Promote environmental awareness and training among site personnel.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Biology, or a related field.
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in environmental management, preferably within the mining or heavy industrial sector.
- Strong knowledge of environmental regulations and permitting processes relevant to mining operations.
- Experience with environmental monitoring techniques and data analysis.
- Proficiency in environmental management software and tools.
- Excellent communication, reporting, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team in a hybrid work environment.
- Willingness to work on-site in East London, Eastern Cape, ZA, and surrounding areas, as well as perform remote data management and reporting.
- Problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to environmental challenges.
- Valid driver's license.
