About the Role
Our client, a national logistics and freight forwarding company, is seeking a proactive and experienced Logistics Supervisor to oversee operations at their busy freight terminal in East London, Eastern Cape . This role is critical for managing the efficient flow of goods, coordinating with carriers, and ensuring accurate documentation and timely dispatch. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership capabilities, a deep understanding of freight handling processes, and excellent problem-solving skills. This position utilizes a hybrid work model, requiring regular on-site supervision at the East London terminal to manage teams and operations directly, complemented by remote workdays for administrative tasks, reporting, and strategic planning. Your expertise will be crucial in maintaining high operational standards and customer satisfaction in this key port city.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise daily operations at the freight terminal, including receiving, sorting, and dispatching of goods.
- Manage and mentor a team of freight handlers, administrative staff, and potentially drivers.
- Ensure accurate processing of shipping documents, customs declarations (if applicable), and invoices.
- Coordinate with shipping lines, trucking companies, and other transport providers to ensure smooth transit.
- Monitor cargo handling procedures to ensure safety, security, and minimize damage.
- Implement and enforce operational procedures, safety protocols, and regulatory compliance.
- Maintain clear and effective communication with internal departments, clients, and external partners.
- Manage inventory of shipping supplies and operational consumables.
- Analyze operational performance data, identify inefficiencies, and propose solutions for improvement.
- Address and resolve operational issues, customer inquiries, and carrier discrepancies promptly.
Requirements
- Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in logistics or freight forwarding, with at least 2 years in a supervisory capacity.
- Proven experience in managing freight terminal operations, including handling various types of cargo.
- Strong understanding of national and potentially international shipping procedures and documentation.
- Excellent leadership, team management, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in logistics software, freight management systems, and MS Office Suite.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in both on-site operational settings and remotely for administrative tasks.
- Knowledge of health and safety regulations relevant to freight terminals.
