Job Purpose: To plan, deliver, and assess high-quality teaching and learning for pupils with special educational needs, ensuring they can access the curriculum, make progress, and achieve their full potential in a supportive and inclusive environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver differentiated lessons tailored to meet a range of special educational needs, including autism, ADHD, learning difficulties, and social, emotional, and mental health needs.
- Adapt teaching strategies, resources, and assessment methods to meet individual pupil needs.
- Create a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment that promotes engagement and positive behaviour.
- Use evidence-based approaches and specialist interventions to support pupil progress.
- Assess, monitor, and track pupil progress using appropriate assessment tools.
- Develop, implement, and review Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and contribute to Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
- Set clear targets and evaluate the impact of interventions.
- Maintain accurate records of pupil progress and support.
- Work closely with the SENCO, teaching assistants, and other professionals to provide consistent support.
- Liaise with parents/carers to share progress, strategies, and concerns.
- Work with external agencies such as educational psychologists, therapists, and support services.
- Support pupils' emotional wellbeing, social development, and self-regulation.
- Implement positive behaviour strategies in line with school policies.
- Promote independence, resilience, and confidence in pupils.
- Contribute to the wider life of the school and inclusive practice.
- Participate in training, professional development, and staff meetings.
- Follow safeguarding, health and safety, and confidentiality policies at all times.
- Uphold professional standards and demonstrate a commitment to equality and inclusion.
Person Specification
- Essential
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent.
- Experience teaching pupils with special educational needs.
- Strong knowledge of SEND legislation and inclusive teaching practices.
- Ability to differentiate effectively and adapt teaching approaches.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- SEN qualification or postgraduate training in special education.
- Experience working with EHCPs and multi-agency professionals.
- Knowledge of specific needs such as autism, speech and language difficulties, or SEMH.
Working Conditions
- Full-time or part-time, term-time.
