Job Purpose: To plan, deliver, and assess high-quality teaching and learning for pupils with special educational needs, ensuring they can access the curriculum, make progress, and achieve their full potential in a supportive and inclusive environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver differentiated lessons tailored to meet a range of special educational needs, including autism, ADHD, learning difficulties, and social, emotional, and mental health needs.
  • Adapt teaching strategies, resources, and assessment methods to meet individual pupil needs.
  • Create a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment that promotes engagement and positive behaviour.
  • Use evidence-based approaches and specialist interventions to support pupil progress.
  • Assess, monitor, and track pupil progress using appropriate assessment tools.
  • Develop, implement, and review Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and contribute to Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
  • Set clear targets and evaluate the impact of interventions.
  • Maintain accurate records of pupil progress and support.
  • Work closely with the SENCO, teaching assistants, and other professionals to provide consistent support.
  • Liaise with parents/carers to share progress, strategies, and concerns.
  • Work with external agencies such as educational psychologists, therapists, and support services.
  • Support pupils' emotional wellbeing, social development, and self-regulation.
  • Implement positive behaviour strategies in line with school policies.
  • Promote independence, resilience, and confidence in pupils.
  • Contribute to the wider life of the school and inclusive practice.
  • Participate in training, professional development, and staff meetings.
  • Follow safeguarding, health and safety, and confidentiality policies at all times.
  • Uphold professional standards and demonstrate a commitment to equality and inclusion.

Person Specification

  • Essential
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent.
  • Experience teaching pupils with special educational needs.
  • Strong knowledge of SEND legislation and inclusive teaching practices.
  • Ability to differentiate effectively and adapt teaching approaches.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Desirable
    • SEN qualification or postgraduate training in special education.
    • Experience working with EHCPs and multi-agency professionals.
    • Knowledge of specific needs such as autism, speech and language difficulties, or SEMH.

    Working Conditions

    • Full-time or part-time, term-time.
