We are looking to recruit an experienced Senior Engineer or Engineer level S278 Engineer to either our Birmingham, Bristol or Reading office. We are looking to recruit an experienced Engineer to take a leading role in helping to deliver a varied range of schemes. As an Engineer within the Civils Team, you will have the opportunity to work on a varied portfolio of work. The schemes will range from small highway improvements to large residential and commercial developments.

Typical designs to deliver include all access junction forms (roundabouts, signalised junctions, ghost‑island right turns, simple priority junctions), within one of the UK’s leading independent consultancies. For the right individual, this is an excellent opportunity to help develop a strategically important sector of the business. PJA is currently engaged in several projects ranging from small scale development up to larger scale projects ranging between 150 to 5,000 residential units with supporting infrastructure.

Our ideal candidate

You will provide design expertise and support on a wide range of projects ensuring designs are prepared in accordance with current legislation, best practice, council policies and to the highest technical standards. With the necessary support, you will have the opportunity to deliver projects, providing technical delivery support and mentoring junior team members within your area of expertise.

We require the applicant to have a degree in Civil Engineering (or another appropriate qualification) and to have gained in‑depth experience in the designing of access junctions. The stages of design experience should include concept development through to detailed design. Our ideal candidate will have a passion and experience of designing LTN1/20 compliant cycling infrastructure schemes. The applicant will ideally have 3D modelling and drainage design experience whilst having experience of delivering Section 278 detailed designs. It is essential that the applicant has knowledge and experience of local authority and National Highways processes/requirements.

The ideal candidate will also have experience and knowledge of the following:

  • National design standards and best practice (i.e. DMRB, Manual for Streets, LTN1/20, NRSWA etc)
  • Adoption agreements for roads and drainage (including S278, S38 & S104)
  • Highway and drainage adoption processes and legal requirements for S278, S38 and S104
  • Comprehensive understanding and use of software packages including AutoCAD, Civils 3D, Vehicle Tracking, KeyLINES/SIGN/POST and Flow
  • Strong communication skills
  • Good time management and organisational skills with the ability to maintain good records
  • Experience managing tasks to delivering projects on time and to a budget
  • Ability to mentor junior members of staff
  • The ability to produce technical reports
  • Experience of public realm design, active travel, cycling infrastructure improvement schemes, major highways design and/or utilities co‑ordination would be advantageous.
  • Experience of site monitoring or supervision role would be beneficial, along with the ability to produce fee proposals and bids.
